  • Visitors spend time strolling through the city's many old streets and avenues, which are lined with fine 18th-century homes and buildings, pausing to admire the old hilltop castle and churches, as well as a number of impressive museums and galleries.
  • Risnjak National Park, a heavily forested, mountainous area with numerous trails for outdoor enthusiasts, is another great place to visit.
  • The city is also known for its annual carnival, which is Croatia's largest.

The Petar Druzic Stairway

  • Climbing the Petar Druzic Stairway (Stube Petra Kruia), which is part of the historically significant pilgrimage path to the Church of Our Lady of Trsat (Gospa Trsatske), is a must-do when walking the old city's many pleasant lanes and alleys.
  • Captain Petar Kruic of Klis built part of the lower portion of the stairway leading from Krizaniceva ulica in the 16th century, with the rest added later.
  • Today, the stairway leads up through the Rjecina Gorge and consists of a total of 538 steps.
  • Yes, it's a difficult and sometimes treacherous climb, but it's well worth the effort.
  • Along the way, there are a number of charming, small chapels dedicated to various saints that also serve as rest stops for pilgrims.
  • Once at the top, you can visit the Our Lady of Trsat Church and Trsat Castle, two of the town's most popular attractions.
destination - Seasons to travel

Our Lady of Trsat

  • The Church of Our Lady of Trsat (Gospa Trsat) has long been a pilgrimage site that has drawn large crowds. It is known for its "miraculous" icon of Mary.
  • The depiction of Mary, also known as the Sanctuary of the Mother of God, is thought to have been painted by St. Luke.
  • This significant Croatian shrine is thought to date from 1291, when angels allegedly placed the home of Jesus' Mother, Mary, here.
  • Franciscan monks built the church you see today on this sacred site soon after, though the adjoining monastery wasn't added until later in the 17th century.
  • The richly decorated chapel, with its collections of religious treasures, including rare gold and silver objects, is a highlight of a visit.
  • Tours of the church's impressive art collection can also be arranged. Of course, the Petar Druzic Stairway or a bus from the city center can get you to the church.
destination - Seasons to travel

Trsat Castle

  • Trsat Castle (Gradina Trsat), perched high above the charming medieval town after which it is named, offers some of the best views in Croatia, along with the neighboring Our Lady of Trsat church.
  • And, while getting here requires some effort due to its elevation (public buses can be used as an alternative), it is well worth the effort.
  • This 13th-century castle is notable for its fine courtyard (konak), which now hosts a café, as well as its superb views over the town, the Rjeina River, and the Adriatic Sea's Kvarner Gulf.
  • Built on the site of an old Roman fort and much altered since, this 13th-century castle is notable for its fine courtyard (konak), which now hosts a café, as well as its superb views over the town, the Rjeina River, and the Kvarner Gulf.
  • The castle also serves as a backdrop for a variety of events and concerts on a regular basis.

destination - Seasons to travel

PEEK&POKE Computer Museum

  • Visiting this one-of-a-kind museum has quickly become one of Rijeka's most popular activities.
  • Over 2,000 old computers, handheld games, printers, gaming consoles, and other relics of technology's great leap forward in the last three decades are housed in this two-story museum.
  • The poke aspect is literal, and you can play on the working machines, so this fun attraction is a popular choice for families.
  • Explaining (and reminiscing about) old technology to children will be a lot of fun for parents.
destination - Seasons to travel

Tour to Gradski Toranj

  • The City Tower (Gradski Toranj) was built into and alongside the surrounding buildings and was originally part of one of the main gates leading into Rijeka that was famous for surviving the great earthquake of 1750 relatively unscathed.
  • Soon after, the tower was built on top of the old gate, with the clock added in the late 18th century and the final flourish, the dome, added in 1890 when the tower was rebuilt.
  • It’s well worth seeing as part of a city walking tour that should also include the lovely 19th-century Town Hall, which is adorned with numerous old coats of arms.
destination - Seasons to travel

Saint Vitus

  • Rijeka Cathedral, also known as Saint Vitus Cathedral (Katedrala Sv Vida) and formerly known as the Church of St. Vitus, is a Baroque structure in the heart of old Rijeka with a unique round floor plan.
  • The original structure, begun in 1638 by Giacomo Briano, a well-known Jesuit architect, was built on top of an even older structure and took more than a century to complete, finally finishing in 1744.
  • A large 13th-century crucifix, which, according to legend, began to bleed after a disgruntled local threw a rock at it, as well as a number of fine Baroque altars, are among the highlights.

Rijeka Culture and Traditions

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Rijeka is an easy candidate for the title of "Croatian Manchester," a hard-working contrarian city whose position just outside the centralized currents of national life has earned it a semi-detached but vital place in the country's popular culture.
  • After all, it was Rijeka that gave birth to Croatian punk, with local band Parafi hosting the first-ever punk concert in communist-ruled Europe in summer 1977.
  • Rijeka went on to produce so many post-punk, electro-pop, and indie bands that local impresario and record producer Goran Lisica-Fox compared the city to the Galapagos Islands in terms of endemic musical species.
  • Rijeka is still the only place outside of Zagreb with a regular live music scene: buzz-saw guitars and blistering melodies are somehow the true folklore of the city.
  • The abrasive-as-sandpaper glamour of Rijeka is a key ingredient in the Croatian-produced Netflix drama Novine , whose cinematic take on the city's housing blocks and portside cranes is spearheading the emergence of a whole new genre of Adriatic noir.

Krčki pršut (Croatian prosciutto)

#Food

  • Krčki also creates a unique Croatian prosciutto by combining two different ham-curing methods.
  • After a dry-salting with sea salt, pepper, rosemary, and bay leaf, the non-smoked ham is cured with its skin on.
  • The hams are left to mature in the Adriatic's strong, salt-laden Bora winds.
  • Between visits to the cobalt-blue waters of the beach, majestic castles, and the town's market and Main Street, you'll have plenty of opportunities to sample Croatian cuisine.
  • Remember to pick up a few items that are only available in Rijeka before you leave.
  • From gold embroidery and lace to a few wooden toys that will last a lifetime, your memories of spending time in this idyllic country will last a lifetime thanks to your Carnival cruise.
