  • Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic after Prague and the capital of the state of Moravia, has a long and rich history dating back to prehistoric times.
  • While remnants of the communist era can still be found on the city's outskirts, dig deeper and you'll find a plethora of magnificent historical sites and attractions.
  • Including the 13th-century Spilberk Castle, the Dietrichstein Palace, and the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, widely regarded as one of the country's most important historic structures.
  • Brno, a university city with many educational institutions, is also an important convention, entertainment, and cultural center, with many fine concert venues, sports halls, and racetracks, including the famous Masaryk Circuit.
  • Wandering through Brno's many delightful public spaces, particularly the historic Zeln trh square in the city's oldest part, which is known for its markets, cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops and galleries, is a fun thing to do.
  • The city's most attractive monument, the Baroque-styled Parnas Fountain, which dates from the 17th century and makes for a great selfie backdrop, is also located in the square.
  • The city's largest park, Luánky; the university's arboretum (Botanická zahrada an arboretum); and the area around the Brno Reservoir, which includes fun things to do like swimming and, come winter, skating, are all notable public spaces to while away the time.
  • Finally, historians should pay a visit to the grounds of the nearby Peace Memorial (Mohyla mru), which is located on the site of Napoleon's decisive battle with a combined Russian and Austrian army during the Battle of Austerlitz.

The Best Places to Visit in Brno

destination - Seasons to travel

The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul

  • The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul (Rmskokatolická farnost u katedrály sv. Petra a Pavla v Brne) is hard to miss, perched atop Petrov Hill in the heart of Brno.
  • This imposing Catholic cathedral, considered one of the most important Czech cultural monuments, remains one of the city's most important attractions due to its magnificent architecture.
  • Its exquisite Baroque interior, as well as the 84-meter-tall twin towers added at the turn of the twentieth century, are highlights (the main part of the building dates from the mid-1700s).
  • If at all possible, time your visit to coincide with the ringing of the midday bells, which are actually heard at 11 a.m.
  • Another highlight is the opportunity to see the original city walls buried beneath the cathedral, as well as the cathedral's fascinating old crypt. At the regular daily mass services, visitors are always welcome.
  • If you're short on time, a one-hour Segway tour of Brno is a fun way to see the cathedral while also seeing other important city landmarks like the old town hall and the Capuchin crypt.
  • St. Thomas's Abbey (Königskloster) is also worth a visit, as it is where geneticist (and Abbot) Gregor Mendel experimented in the property's garden in the early 1800s.
  • The Mendel Museum, a fascinating museum dedicated to the man and his work, has been established here.

The Špilberk Castle and the Brno City Museum

  • Pilberk Castle (hrad pilberk) was built on a commanding hill by Czech King Pemysl Otakar II in the 13th century and has served many functions over the years, including royal castle, fortress, and prison.
  • The Brno City Museum, founded in 1904, is now housed in the castle and hosts a number of excellent permanent (and frequent temporary) exhibitions.
  • The architectural history of the castle and its role as a prison, as well as the history of Brno, are the subjects of permanent exhibits.
  • Throughout the summer, the castle's courtyard hosts concerts, theatrical performances – including a popular Shakespearian festival – and other cultural events, and visitors are encouraged to climb the lookout tower for spectacular views of the old city.
destination - Seasons to travel

The Moravian Karst and Caves

  • The Moravian Karst and Caves (Moravsk kras) are a must-see in Brno, thanks to its cool air and stunning caverns.
  • The Karst area, located 25 kilometers northeast of Brno, is 100 square kilometers in size and contains over 1,000 caves and gorges, five of which are open to the public for self-guided tours (trails are clearly marked indicating their level of difficulty).
  • A number of less-traveled caverns can be visited with a qualified spelunker as a guide for the truly adventurous.
  • Numerous interesting stalagmites and stalactites can be seen easily from the well-lit passageways, and an excellent boat tour along an underground river is also a highlight.
  • The Macocha Abyss, a deep chasm with numerous excellent hiking and biking trails, is also worth visiting.
  •  It is overlooked by viewing platforms and footbridges. Tourists flock to the caves in droves, so make a reservation ahead of time.

Tugendhat Villa

  • Tugendhat Villa, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is regarded as one of the most outstanding examples of early twentieth-century modern architecture.
  • It was built in 1930 for Fritz Tugendhat and his family, after whom the building is named, in a posh residential area and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The villa – the first masterpiece of modern architecture to be built on Czech soil – is known for its unique open-plan structure and use of materials such as onyx, chrome, travertine, and ebony, as well as incorporating some of the most cutting-edge technology and concepts of the time.
  • Try to fit in a visit to other notable architectural landmarks, such as Stiassni villa, if you have the time.
  • This impressive mansion, which was built for a wealthy textile mogul and completed in 1929, is notable for its attractive interior and enchanting gardens.
  • Löw-Beer Villa, which houses a local museum, library, and café, is also worth seeing (guided tours available).

The Church of St. James and the Brno Ossuary

  • The attractive 14th-century Church of St. James (CzechKostel svatého Jakuba) is Brno's second most important religious structure after the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul.
  • The church, which is now a National Cultural Landmark because of its historic architecture and artifacts, has an old Gothic crucifix, early 16th-century reliefs, including one of Christ's crucifixion and a number of interesting tombstones, and a Baroque organ.
  • The Brno Ossuary is one of the most unusual features. This vast collection of human bones, discovered during an archeological survey of St. James Square in 2001, is as chilling in scale as it is in the unusual way it is displayed, including collections heaped in archways and used as decorative displays and ornamentation.
  • According to estimates, around 50,000 people's remains were discovered, making it the world's second largest after the famous Catacombs of Paris.
  • The causes of death for the majority of those buried here are also intriguing, including plague, warfare, and starvation due to city sieges.

Brno Culture and Traditions

  • Brno has a cultural life that is unusually rich for a city of its size.
  • Exhibitions in museums and galleries, plays, concerts, operas, and dance performances are just a few of the options.
  • To begin with, the term "theatre" in Czech encompasses a broader range than it does in English.
  • When Czechs say they're going to "the theatre," they could be referring to a play, an opera, an operetta, a musical, a ballet performance, or something else entirely.
  • The wide range of activities covered by the term "theatre" is reflected in the activities of Brno's two leading performing arts institutions.
  • Individual drama, opera, and ballet companies perform at the National Theatre in Brno, which has three spectacular buildings at its disposal.
  • The Municipal Theatre, which operates out of two state-of-the-art buildings, brings together actors, singers, dancers, and, of course, musicians.
  • In the case of both institutions, each building serves as a performance space for more than one of their ensembles.
