Why Beziers Is Worth a Visit: Here Are the Best Places You Must See
Cathedrale Saint-Nazare de Beziers
- This impressive 13th-century cathedral, perched atop a steep rock face, is well worth the climb.
- The ornate exterior and gorgeous, centuries-old stained-glass windows, as well as the impressive old pipe organ that still resides within the church, are quietly awe-inspiring.
- This lovely old building is surrounded by an equally lovely setting.
- You’ll be surrounded by breathtaking, panoramic views of the French countryside from the picturesque gardens at the base of the Cathedral.
- Which are especially spectacular if you summon the courage to climb the narrow stairways up to the cloisters.
Musée des Beaux Arts
- Bézier's Musée des Beaux Arts, which is housed in two old hotels, the Fabrégat and the Fayet, was founded in 1989 to display an impressive collection of European paintings and sculptures dating back to the 15th century.
- Work by artists from the Italian, Dutch, Spanish, and French schools can be found here, as well as an extensive personal collection of modern art belonging to Béziers native Jean Moulin, a reverend member of the French resistance during WWII.
- Regular exhibitions of both contemporary and classic artists are held at the museum.

Allées Paul-Riquet
- Allées Paul-Riquet is a princely promenade that was plotted along the lines of the city's old ditches and ramparts in 1827, and it is the heart of Béziers in every way.
- The avenue is wide and long, with twin rows of plane trees on either side and grand old apartment buildings.
- Residents of Béziers continue to visit to meet up with friends and get some light exercise.
- There are numerous restaurants and bars with outdoor terraces, and the flower market is open every Friday.
- During the annual Féria de Béziers in August, much of the nightly entertainment takes place here.
Musée du Biterrois
- A museum dedicated to Béziers' history is housed in 17th-century barracks.
- The most violent episode in the city's history, the massacre of the Cathars during the Albigensian Crusade in 1209, is examined in detail, with a model depicting how the city would have appeared, as well as accounts and paintings depicting the carnage.
- Inscribed stones, amphorae, busts, and glassware are among the extensive collections of Roman artefacts.
- The museum also has exhibits on the natural history of this region of southwestern France, as well as information on city life up until the twentieth century.
Pont Vieux
- For centuries, the only way to get from Provence to Toulouse was to cross the River Orb on this 13th-century bridge.
- The Pont Vieux is a magnificent Romanesque structure with asymmetrical arches that was inscribed into France's historic monuments inventory in 1963.
- The parallel Pont Neuf, with the Pont Vieux and then the mass of the city mounting sharply on the left bank, offers perhaps the best view of the Béziers cityscape.
- Surprisingly, the Avenue de Pont Vieux is now one-way, but there isn't a more well-worn path in Béziers than this narrow bridge.
