The Best Places to Visit in Brive

destination - Seasons to travel

Hôtel de Labenche

  • This magnificent Renaissance mansion houses Brive's art and history museum.
  • But, before you go inside, take a moment to admire this building, which is widely regarded as one of the region's finest Renaissance structures.
  • It was built around 1540 by Lower Limousin's Minister of Justice and Clerk to King Francis I, Jean de Calvimont, and later served as a stopover for royalty visiting Brive, including Louis XIII.
  • It's made of that lovely pink sandstone, and there are plenty of details to admire, including a regal arcade, mullioned windows, a variety of sculptures, and an unusual chimneystack modeled after a Greek temple.
destination - Seasons to travel

Musée d’Art et d’Histoire

  • A 5,000-item cache aids in the recounting of Brive's 100,000-year history.
  • It's a museum that covers a wide range of topics, including natural history, archaeology, ethnography, and numismatics.
  • However, there are a number of oddities that aren't from Brive but are nonetheless intriguing.
  • Take, for example, the piano that belonged to Claude Debussy at the turn of the century, or the incredible tapestry collection.
  • Several are from the Aubusson Manufactory, but ten are from the Mortlake Royal Manufactory in England.
  • This is France's largest collection of 17th-century English tapestries.
destination - Seasons to travel

Denoix Distillery

  • You can get a real shot of local savoir-faire at this 19th-century family distillery.
  • The Denoix brand produces a variety of liqueurs made from orange, grape, walnut, strawberry, chocolate, and various herbs, and is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday to show you around.
  • One of the many interesting aspects of this location is that the gleaming copper stills have remained unchanged since the 1800s, providing plenty of photo opportunities.
  • Also interesting is that the operation is seasonal, so depending on the time of year, a different fruit or plant will be macerating.
  • A visit would be incomplete without a liqueur or aperitif tasting.

Old Brive

  • While the town of Brive does not have any major attractions, it is the type of place where you can go shopping.
  • You might get sidetracked into an arcaded courtyard or stare up at an old turret or wrought-iron balcony as you walk through this tangle of streets, which has quite a few stone houses from the 15th and 16th centuries.
  • A lovely little flower garden is hidden behind the town hall, and the tourist office has a small itinerary of historic mansions.
  • The 18th-century Hôtel Desbruslys and the Hôtel Quinhart with its corbelled turret are the cream of the crop.

CA Brive

  • Brive, despite its provincial status, has a reputation that extends far beyond French borders.
  • The rugby club, which is a mainstay of the Top 14, France's highest division, is one of the reasons for this.
  • Brive's current lineup includes former and current France internationals such as Julien Le Devedec and Lucas Pointud, as well as South African and Australian imports.
  • Despite its small size, the Stade Amédée-Domenech has a capacity of nearly 14,000 people, making it the largest sporting arena in the Limousin region!
  • Come for a match on a weekend between August and May, while at any time you can also buy a CA Brive souvenir at the team’s store.

  • The cold-pressed oil has a clear visual appearance and a fluid texture. The scents are delicate and long-lasting, resembling nuts and baked breadcrumbs.
  • The fruity and intense aroma of the hot-pressed oil is reminiscent of biscuits and baked bread, with toasty notes.

Gour Noir

#Food

  • Gour Noir is a traditional French cheese made by the Arnaud family in Correze.
  • This soft, leaf-shaped cheese is made from the raw milk of white Saanens goats. It takes 2 to 6 weeks to mature.
  • The flavor is mild, milky, and lactic when young, but it becomes more intense and robust as it ages.
  • The inside of the bloomy rind is smooth and creamy, while the outside is charcoal-colored.
  • Sel cendré, a mixture of salt and charcoal powder that protects and preserves the cheese, gives it its distinctive color.
  • Gour Noir should be served with a few slices of country bread.

Salers Liqueur

#Food

  • The first batch of this French gentian liqueur was made in 1885.
  •  A macerate of yellow gentian and a secret combination of aromatic plants are used to make the drink.
  •  It is then aged and mellowed in Limousin oak before being tweaked with sugar, alcohol, and water to achieve a 16 percent alcohol by volume (ABV).
  • Salers is a complex liqueur with herbal and citrusy notes, as well as a light golden color.
  • Its subtle bitterness is best appreciated when sipped slowly over ice, but it also works well in cocktails and long drinks.
