- It was adorned with its distinctive russet-coloured mediaeval brick structures.
- The Palace of the Kings of Majorca and the threatening Castillet, which regulated passage into this hub of marine trade, are strewn around the old area.

Why Perpignan Is Worth a Visit: Here Are the Best Places You Must See
Palais des Rois de Majorque
- The Kingdom of Majorca ruled Perpigan for less than 70 years, from 1276 to 1349, but its imprint on the city may still be seen.
- The palace was constructed to be the seat of power for the entire kingdom and sits on a vast raised location to the south of Perpignan's historic centre.
- It began in the late 1200s and combined Romanesque and later Gothic architecture.
- The courtyard of the Cour d'Honneur, with two flights of galleries, the chapels and the Great Hall where the court was held, are magnificent.
- Every August, the large courtyards and gardens welcome an event that shows Perpignan's Iberian soul: the Guitares au Palais, which lasts three days and features live flamenco, classical, pop, and jazz guitar performances.
Perpignan Cathedral
- Although this tower began in the 1300s, it did not become Perpignan's cathedral until the beginning of the 1600s, when the "see" was moved here from nearby Elne.
- It was built by King Sancho II of Majorca, who also ordered nearly all of the city's mediaeval architecture.
- It has a southern gothic design, as does nearly all of the city's mediaeval architecture.
- The altarpiece from the 14th and 15th centuries, the organ with painted panels and carvings from 1504, and, most all, the "Dévot Christ" chapel, with a frightening wooden sculpture of Jesus on the cross carved in the 1300s, are all worth seeing.
Perpignan Castillet
- The city's most photographed feature is the strong gatehouse that guarded the city's main entrance.
- The tower was built with bricks and marble and adorned with outsized ornate crenellations during the Kingdom of Majorca.
- When Perpignan fell under French rule, Louis XI extended the Castillet, adding the tallest portion, a turret topped by a dome, and converting it into a jail in the 18th and 19th centuries.
- Inside is a museum dedicated to Catalan traditional traditions and a spiral stairway with 142 steps leading to a terrace with views of Perpignan.

Hôtel de Ville
- The Hall of the Consuls, erected in the early 1300s on King Sancho I's instructions, was the forerunner of Perpignan's city hall, where the delegates convene.
- The hall, with its magnificent 15th-century coffered timber ceiling, is still used for weddings and is at the centre of the complex.
- The renaissance arcaded courtyard and the rest of the administrative buildings were later constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries.
- In the courtyard, take a moment to admire La Méditerranée, a bronze sculpture by Arsitide Maillol, a well-known 19th and 20th-century artist.
Loge de Mer
- In the late-14th century, John I of Aragon ordered the construction of this gothic civic edifice to help manage sea trade: it was the stock market and sea consular office and, therefore, the core of business in the old centre, but it also held the town council for a while.
- The structure was expanded in the 16th century by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, as evidenced by a plaque dated 1540.
- The weathervane on the corner representing a ship is another intriguing clue concerning Loge de Mer's purpose.

- Perpignan had a population of 121,875 in the commune proper in 2016 and 268,577 in the metropolitan region, making it the last major French city before the Spanish border. Perpignan is also known as the Iberian Peninsula's "Entrance" or "Border Town."
- It has kept a large old town with bodegas in the historic centre and colourful residences in a series of charming lanes and alleys between the Têt and its tributary, the Basse.
- The city's International Photojournalism Festival, mediaeval Trobades, and centuries-old garnet industry are also well-known.

Perpignan: Your Guide to Food, Fun, and Fashion Trends
Banyuls
#Food
- This fortified dessert wine has been produced in the French region of Roussillon since the 13th century.
- Banyuls is primarily made from Grenache grape varieties, though Carignan, Muscat (in small amounts), Macabeu, Mourvedre, and Tourbat can also be used.
- Although it is best known for its full-bodied red wines with exquisite aromas of cooked fruit, prunes, raisins, and cocoa, Banyuls also produces a white wine with notes of pears, honey, and acacia. Banyuls wines have a dense texture, complex aromatic profile, and well-balanced acidity and sweetness, and are classified as vin doux naturel, or naturally sweet wine.
Anchois de Collioure
#Food
- Anchois de Collioure are Engraulis encrassicholus anchovies from the Collioure region of France.
- The anchovies can be purchased salted, as fillets in oil, or as brined fillets.
- Making these one-of-a-kind anchovies is so complicated that it involves nine steps.
- The fish are delivered fresh to the salting factory, where they are pre-salted and brined, sorted, topped, gutted, and aged until they reach their desired colour, flavour, and texture.
- The fish are then gutted, filleted, dried, and packaged in airtight containers before being juiced with brine or oil and sold.
Abricots Rouges du Roussillon
#Food
- Abricots Rouges du Roussillon are small, orange to red apricots that were first cultivated in the 17th century in Versailles and later in the 19th century in the Eastern Pyrenees mountains.
- Their bright colour is a clear indicator that this fruit contains high levels of beta-carotene and other health-beneficial ingredients like potassium, fibre, and vitamins.
- These incredibly fragrant apricots are an endemic cultivar with minimal acidity and a delicate, fragrant flavour.
- The meaty Roussillon apricots are incredibly juicy and sweet due to the significant levels of sunshine, especially during the ripening season.
Les Caves Maillol
#Fashion
- A wine shop with skilled shop workers sells whiskey, champagnes, and much more.
- Be advised on wine pairings and pick out the perfect bottle to take home and enjoy with dinner.
- Weekly wine and spirits tastings are also held in the shop.
Galeries Lafayette
#Fashion
- On Place de la Résistance, a well-known French department store with four floors of fashion and cosmetics, is worth visiting, especially during the great sales seasons (January and June).
- Find all your favourite brands under one roof, from Armani to Calvin Klein, Chanel to Clinique.
Rue Paratilla
#Fashion
- One of Perpignan's most lively areas is this tiny and charming street.
- Sala, which specialises in Collioure anchovies, or any of the little and lovely scented boutiques, are two reasons for Perpignan's popularity among travellers.
Aquasplash water park France
#Fun
- Aquasplash is located in Antibes, near Nice, and is part of the Marineland aquapark.
- A sea aquarium, a kid's adventure theme
- Park, a golf course, and a water park are all part of this complex.
- Although this park has some long flumes, it appears to cater to a younger age group of children (6-14 years).
- The standard lazy river, wave pool, and giant slides with dingy boats and doughnuts are available (Spaceboat and Side Winder).
- The Draguero, a 12m high water slide, appears to be the primary attraction, but if your kids are teenagers, they will probably find it a bit tame.
- This slide also has a 1.4m height limit; therefore, children under 12 will be unable to use it.
- The Aquasplash water park is adjacent to Biot and is located just off the A8 Autoroute in the suburbs of Antibes.
- It's within a 10-minute drive from Nice (or you may take the train to Biot station).
- The park is open from the middle of June until the first week of September.
- Adult tickets are €27, and children's tickets are €21 (however, there is a family ticket and a nice touch where you receive 50% off if you attend on your birthday).
Sainte-Maxime Aqualand South France water park
#Fun
- The Aqualand water park in Sainte-Maxime has some good family tickets (€83 for two adults and two children).
- The water park is located on the outskirts of Sainte-Maxime and offers beautiful views of the hills and the shore.
- Every year, the park is open from June 24 until August 30.

- This 2200-hectare protected natural area is characterised by a predominance of forest and rocky habitats.
- It is the only regional nature reserve in the Pyrénées-Orientales.
- It is also the most inaccessible of all Catalan natural reserves: beautiful and unexplored gorges, cliffs, and often impenetrable forests; it is no surprise that it was given the moniker "Nyer la wild."
- With approximately 2,200 species of wildlife and flora recorded, the Reserve is an excellent habitat for raptors such as the Golden Eagle and Peregrine Falcon, as well as the kingdom of bats, which includes 22 species.
- The Nature Reserve of Nyer is also the site of traditional activities such as hunting, fishing, and breeding, all carried out with care for the natural environment.

Perpignan Must-Attend Festivals and Events
- The most popular is Le Festival d'Été de Perpignan, or Perpignan Summer Festival, which runs for most of July and features a jam-packed dance, music, theatre, and film programme.
- From August to September, Perpignan organises the highly recognised International Festival of Photojournalism, Visa Pour L'Image.
- This, we're guessing, was significantly different from Catalan city's famous festivities.
- This small festival was a family-oriented, community-driven event, and the performances, handmade costumes, hastily put-together displays, and laid-back ambience all had an endearingly local feel to them.
