A Sneak Peek into Poitiers
- Poitiers, the capital of Poitou-Charentes in western France, is a university town with layers of mediaeval history to explore.
- The various cathedrals take on new significance with a bit of history as the queens, dukes, and counts who reigned in this city are brought to life.
- On squares like Place Charles de Gaulle, there are many charming half-timbered houses, and you may have fun looking for the gothic and Renaissance palaces where the city's elite once resided.
- Then, for at least a few hours, you may forget about the past at the futuristic Futuroscope theme park.
- Poitiers is a World Heritage Site as part of the French network of cities along the Way of Saint James, and it's well worth a visit, even if the adjacent Futuroscope theme park drew you to this section of western France in the first place.

The Best Places to Visit in Poitiers
Musée Sainte-Croix
- The city's largest museum is housed in a labyrinthine brutalist structure from the 1970s.
- You'll feel somewhat knowledgeable about Poitiers and the surrounding after an extensive search through these galleries, divided into prehistory, ancient archaeology, mediaeval history, fine arts ethnography, and regional.
- The archaeology department will captivate you because the museum is built above the 7th-century Abbey of Sainte-Croix.
- Don't miss the Roman sculpture of Minerva, the Chevonceaux trove of Gallo-Romain coins, the Priory of Saint-6th-century Pierre's stucco, and remarkable pieces by Rodin, Camille Claudel, and Eugène Boudin.
Futuroscope
- Since the Lumière brothers in the nineteenth century, France has been at the forefront of the cinematic arts, and the Futuroscope theme park is a product of that tradition.
- It is the third most popular theme park, and for more than 30 years, it has dazzled visitors with simulators, rides, and spectacular presentations in IMAX 3D and 4D theatres.
- The rides and performances are held in incredible metal and glass constructions, some angular and others rounder, but all with enormous dimensions.
- Unlike other theme parks, most shows have defined start times, so you can plan and avoid wasting your day in lines.
Baptistère Saint-Jean
- You may see the earliest Christian church in France in Poitiers, built in the 4th century and subsequently altered to its current shape in the 7th century.
- When it came to baptism, the Merovingians didn't play around, and instead of a bit font, the church had a vast octagonal pool in which people had to be submerged entirely to complete the entrance ritual.
- Inside the little archaeological museum, Merovingian tomb covers are on exhibit, and stunning murals from the 12th and 13th centuries adorn the walls.

- The park is mainly made up of parterres in the French manner, with arrow-straight roads running alongside topiaries.
- A lovely English garden with flowerbeds, a decorative river, statues, a cave, and a small menagerie with guinea pigs, parakeets, and rabbits is also available.
Église Notre-Dame la Grande
- Built-in the 11th century, this church is a stunning example of Poitevin Romanesque architecture.
- Above the choir are mediaeval paintings of Christ in grandeur and the Virgin and Child encircled by a mandorla.
- However, the church's entryway receives the most praise, with brilliant 12th-century friezes depicting motifs from Old and New Testament texts.
- The sculptures on the church's exterior were painted in the Middle Ages. Light artist Skertzo has performed the Polychromies de Notre-Dame on summer evenings since 1995, returning the brilliant colours to these walls with spectacular projections.
