Rodez Cathedral

  • Rodez Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rodez) is a national landmark and the seat of the Rodez Bishopric. Rodez's closed west front was once part of the city wall.
  • Rodez was Christianized in the fourth and fifth centuries AD, with the first mention of a cathedral occurring around 516.
  • This structure was rebuilt around 1000, and almost nothing remains after the decision to rebuild it from the ground up in 1276.
  • Due to the Black Death and the Hundred Years' War, construction was halted for many years, and it was in the early 15th century the choir and vault, as well as the transept and the first sectors of the nave, were completed.
  • Following the fire in 1510, bishop François d'Estaing had it rebuilt in 1513-1526 under the direction of Antoine Salvan, complete with a new majestic bell tower. Around 1531, the Cathedral was finished.
  • In 1792-98, Pierre Méchain and Jean-Baptiste Delambre calculated the earth's circumference using Rodez Cathedral as the central surveying point. This was used in the metre's definition.

  • The Musée Fenaille, located in the heart of Rodez, is a museum of art, history, and archaeology that was founded over 170 years ago and is regarded as one of the best archaeological museums in France.
  • The Fenaille Museum is known as the "Little Louvre of Aveyron" for its collections, architecture, reception, and the numerous services it provides visitors.
  • The Fenaille Museum is famous for its unique collection of 5000-year-old statues-menhirs, the oldest and largest in Western Europe.
  • These statues-menhirs, which contain the most famous "Dame de Saint-Sernin," are the oldest prominent prehistoric human figures discovered to date.

  • The new Soulages Museum - le Musée Soulages - opened in Rodez, southwest France, in May 2014, as the most recent of France's world-class art galleries.

  • In 2009, the Pompidou Arts Centre in Paris hosted a retrospective exhibition of painter Pierre Soulages, which drew over 500,000 visitors, making it the most popular exhibition ever staged at the Centre for a living French artist.

Episcopal Palace

  • Initially, the Bishop's Palace stood on the site of the Cathedral. It was relocated to its current location during the nave's construction in 1470.
  • This first Palace was destroyed by the people of Rodez in 1590 during the Religious Wars so that their bishop could not use it as a Citadel hosting armed troops of the Catholic party.
  • In 1794, the current bishopric was rebuilt in brick, with a courtyard staircase modelled after the castle of Fontainebleau.

  • The imposing Église Saint-Amans is a 12th-century Catholic church.
  • This stately structure combines two architectural styles.
  • While the exteriors are decorated in Gothic style, the interior decor of the church is decorated in Romanesque style.

  • Bleu des Causses is a classic blue cheese made from raw cow's milk.
  • The cheese is placed in a cave exposed to cold and damp air draughts, resulting in a unique maturation process lasting at least 70 days.
  • Penicillium mould forms inside the cheese due to the cave's air gusts and the fact that the cheese is pricked with needles.
  • Bleu des Causses is not pressed or cooked, and its flavour is full, intense, salty, and spicy (due to the mould), with a crumbly and creamy texture.

  • The cold-pressed oil has an apparent visual appearance and a fluid texture.
