The Best Places to Visit in Dortmund

destination - Seasons to travel

Borussia Dortmund

  • There aren't many football teams that are the best thing about their city, but Borussia Dortmund is one of them.
  • After Bayern Munich, BVB is Germany's second most successful team, playing in the massive Signal Iduna Park.
  • The Signal Iduna Park is Europe's second-largest club stadium, having grown to its current size following a reconstruction that nearly bankrupted the club in the early 2000s.
  • A stadium tour is required to see the "Gelbe Wand," or "Yellow Wall," on the southern terrace. Even better if you come for a game where this stand is packed with 24,454 fans.
  • Choose a domestic Bundesliga match, book well in advance, and be blown away by the volume generated in arguably the world's most fantastic athletic arena.
destination - Seasons to travel

German Football Museum

  • When it was decided to reinvest the earnings from Germany's 2006 World Cup in a football museum, North Rhine-Westphalia was the logical choice for the site.
  • Dortmund was chosen as the host city because of the great concentration of well-supported football teams in this country region.
  • The museum, which opened in 2015, is dedicated to domestic German football and the German national team, the "Mannschaft."
  • You may learn about legends such as Franz Beckenbauer and see classic matches like the 1954 World Cup Final in Bern.
  • The World Cup and European Championship trophies and a variety of souvenirs, interactive exhibitions, and quizzes are on display.
  • The exhibition concludes with a small indoor pitch for a friendly football game.
destination - Seasons to travel

Florianturm

  • On the north side of the Westfalenpark is Dortmund's broadcast tower entrance.
  • The lift to the observation deck costs €2.50, and the park entrance fee of €1.50.
  • The Florianturm, at just under 220 metres, is Germany's 14th highest structure and, for a brief period after its completion in 1959, the world's tallest television tower.
  • The elevator whisks you to the two 140-meter observation decks in no time.
  • There isn't an orientation board to show out the landmarks below, but you can make do with a map on your phone.
  • If you want to linger longer over the view, there's a spinning restaurant beneath the lower deck.

LWL-Industriemuseum Zeche Zollern

  • Wait till you see Zeche Zollern, which boasts fashionable Art Nouveau characteristics from the turn of the twentieth century if you never thought a colliery could be lovely.
  • The central machine building, which is fronted by a stained glass window with blue and green panels, was built by Berlin Jugendstil architect Bruno Möhring.
  • Since 1981, the colliery has served as the headquarters for the LWL Industrial Museum, which has eight locations around Wesphalia and Lippe.
  • The exhibition at Zeche Zollern delves into the Ruhr industrial region's social and cultural past.
  • At the same time, the surrounding buildings have been refurbished and opened up: the machine hall's 100-year-old conveyers, converters, and compressors are a thrilling relic of the steam age.
destination - Seasons to travel

Dortmunder U

  • Since 1927, this high-rise former brewery building has served as a Dortmund landmark.
  • It was home to the Dortmunder Union Brauerei, once West Germany's most productive brewery.
  • The iconic "U" on the roof, nine metres tall, was erected in 1968.
  • The Ostwall Museum, exhibition halls, a restaurant, an art organisation, and a campus for the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences were all added to the Dortmunder U in 2010 to coincide with the Ruhr becoming the European Capital of Culture.
  • The "flying pictures" installation by cinematic artist Adolf Winkelmann is displayed throughout the day on the grid of panels beneath the "U."

Stromberger Pflaume

#Food

  • The 'Golden Blue,' as the Stromberg people affectionately refer to it, is one of the oldest plum kinds, having been brought into the region from southern France and Spain by the clerk and traveller Louis Niedieck in 1790.
  • Approximately 15,000 plum and damson trees of the Stromberger plum species now grace the landscape of Münster's old castle hamlet.
  • The Stromberger Pflaume is a tiny yet excellent plum, according to connoisseurs.
  • Because of its low water content dries faster than other plum cultivars, leaving it faintly fragrant and soluble.
  • This quality makes them ideal for cooking and baking, and their sweetness makes them ideal for making alcoholic beverages.

Westfälischer Knochenschinken

#Food

  • The pork used to manufacture this ham comes from the Westphalian region, recognised for its traditional pig rearing.
  • Every production process is completed by hand, and the recipe remains a closely guarded secret.
  • The method begins with rubbing a specific consistency of salt into the ham and bone, which is then left to cure and dry for an extended time in ageing chambers.
  • The hams are left in a smoking chamber over a beech and juniper wood fire to generate the smoked form.
  • This procedure takes a long time, but dark red meat with a golden yellow rind and a subtle, nutty flavour.

Nieheimer Käse

#Food

  • This traditional cheese from Nieheim in Ostwestfalen-Lippe is created from low-fat sour cow's milk quark.
  • The cheese is rubbed with a mixture of salt, cumin, and water after a few days of ripening.
  • Over time, Nieheim cheese becomes stronger and tougher, making it ideal for grating.
  • It has a slightly sour, savoury, spicy, and caraway-like flavour.
  • Despite its low-fat level (less than 1%), it has a vibrant flavour.
  • This hand cheese's manufacturing and sale are highly regulated.
  • The 1927 criteria for creating this cheese, which is on display at the Nieheim Cheese Museum, are still in effect.

Europa-Park in Rust

  • Europa-Park in Rust, Baden-Württemberg, is Germany's undisputed monarch of theme parks.
  • Up to 5.6 million people come every year, making it Germany's most popular amusement park. Trending upwards.
  • For the fourth year in a straight, a US magazine named it the best amusement park globally. The Mack family built Europa-Park in 1975 as an exhibition area.
  • She wanted to show off her products, which are theme park rides.
  • The adventure park immediately became a tourist attraction, and in 1978 it set a new record with one million visitors.

  • The park had only a few rides and wildlife enclosures when it first opened.
  • Initially, the owner desired to collaborate with Europa-Park Rust's founder.
  • This partnership never happened because he died tragically shortly after.
  • Today, the Heide Park Resort includes a hotel, a holiday camp, and a fun pool in addition to an amusement park with a range of roller coasters and rides such as the Colossos wooden roller coaster, the 103-metre high freefall tower "Scream," and Germany's first diving coaster.

  • The Westfalenpark, located on the south side of Dortmund and under the watchful gaze of the Florianturm, is a 70-hectare green space with a plethora of small activities to keep you occupied for the entire afternoon.
  • A visit to the horticulture areas is recommended: The Deutsches Rosarium boasts 3,000 distinct rose kinds and hosts annual events such as the electronic Juicy Beats festival in the summer and the Lichterfest (Lights Festival) in the winter.
  • The chair lift, which began in 1959 and ran on Sundays between "Mountain" and "Valley" stations 500 metres apart, is another summer attraction.
  • There's also a tiny railway, a flamingo-filled bird enclosure, and a pond with rowboat rentals.
  • Dortmund's botanical gardens, at 65 hectares, are among the world's largest.
  • They were called the Romberg family, whose estate was planted in 1822 as an English park.
  • Thousands of perennials, blooming plants, medicinal herbs, and trees have been planted since the park was given to the city in the 1920s.
  • Tropical plants, succulents, ferns, camellias, lemon trees, and jasmine grow in four greenhouses.
  • Some of the elder trees from the Romberg estate are among the tallest in North Rhine-Westphalia.
  • The perennials, surrounded by yew hedges and grouped by colour, are worth the trip alone.
  • With over 400 plant types and delicious scents in the spring and summer, the herb garden is truly unique.
