The Best Places to Visit in Heidelberg

destination - Seasons to travel

Heidelberg Castle

  • Heidelberg Castle, according to Mark Twain, "To be effective, a ruin must be placed correctly.
  • This 16th-century castle, built of red Neckar sandstone on a terraced hillside approximately 200 metres above Heidelberg's Old Town, is one of the outstanding specimens of German Renaissance architecture.
  • It has remained the largest and most spectacular ruin in Germany since its destruction by the French, who destroyed the Palatinate in the 17th century.
  • Many festivals are conducted at the castle, most of which are held in its evocative courtyard, which hosts theatrical performances, concerts, and firework displays.
  • The Heidelberg Castle Festival, which is from June to August and comprises an eclectic mix of theatre, choral music, chamber orchestras, jazz, folk, and opera, is one of the most popular events.
  • The Bergbahn, a funicular railway from the Kornmarkt to Heidelberg Castle, or a 15-minute walk from the Old Town, can take you there.
destination - Seasons to travel

Hauptstrasse and the Altstadt

  • The Hauptstrasse in Heidelberg is a great site to start your exploration of this lovely city.
  • From this short main street, innumerable narrower side alleys and passageways overflowing with things to see: unspoilt mediaeval architecture, magnificent ancient churches, boutique boutiques, galleries, cafés, and restaurants, to name a few.
  • The early 15th-century Heiliggeistkirche, or Church of the Holy Spirit, and Haus zum Ritter, a Renaissance structure dating from 1592, are both highlights.
  • The Neckarstaden, home of Marstall, the old court stables and home of Heidelberg University's art collection, and the Stadthalle, adjoins the landing stages for the many boats that take tourists on cruises along the castle-lined Neckar, are two more highlights.
  • The magnificent Heidelberg Christmas Market, which takes up five city squares in December, transforms one into a public skating rink.
  • The Kornmarkt is turned into a fairy-tale setting with the lighted castle looming above.
destination - Seasons to travel

Church of the Holy Spirit

  • The Church of the Holy Spirit, with its Baroque steeple, is located in the heart of Heidelberg's market square.
  • The tower's foundations were erected in 1398, but it wasn't finished until 1544.
  • However, the tower you see today was erected after the French burned the church on fire during the War of the Palatine Succession in 1709.
  • The church is an early example of ecumenism, or at the very least of peaceful coexistence between Catholics and Protestants, who utilised it simultaneously.
  • In 1706, a wall was built to allow both churches to hold services simultaneously; the wall was demolished in 1936, and the church is now Protestant.

Heidelberg University

  • Universitätsplatz, on the south side of the Hauptstrasse, is home to the Old University, which dates back to 1711.
  • Karzer is located on its east side in Augustinergasse and is, for many, the most memorable element of visiting Heidelberg University.
  • Students who were found guilty of transgressions (such as duelling or disturbing the peace by singing late at night) were held for 24 hours in this facility.
  • They left graffiti on the walls, which is still visible today. The Hexenturm, or Witches' Tower, previously part of the town's defences, is behind the New University, which was completed in 1928-31.
  • The University Library, located in Grabengasse, is a well-stocked library whose main attraction is the 14th-century Manessische Handschrift, an illuminated manuscript of mediaeval melodies.
destination - Seasons to travel

Karl Theodor Bridge

  • Heidelberg's magnificent Karl Theodor Bridge, also known as the Old Bridge, has been immortalised in various poetry and paintings, a monument to the romanticism surrounding the landmark.
  • The renowned bridge, which spans the Neckar and unites the two sides of mediaeval Heidelberg, is named after the man who designed and erected its nine red sandstone arches in 1788 to replace the innumerable wooden bridges that had come before it.
  • The vistas of Heidelberg and its sister bridge, the twin-towered Brückentor, are well worth a stroll along the bridge.

Heidelberg Culture and Traditions

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Heidelberg is a city that values culture. It is one of Germany's medium-sized cities with the highest per capita cultural expenditure.
  • As a result, there is an impressively diverse selection of cultural options. Heidelberg has been the first and only city in Germany to be designated as a UNESCO City of Literature since 2014.
  • Heidelberg is also said to be the birthplace of German hip-hop music, which is less well-known.
  • The Heidelberg Hip-Hop Archive has been housed at the Heidelberg City Archive since 2019, collecting items related to Heidelberg's hip-hop history.
  • Take a trip down Heidelberg's main street, and you'll notice architectural traces of the city's cultural history.
  • If you want to learn more, go to the Kurpfälzisches Museum, which takes tourists on a fascinating trip through history.
  • Those who like more contemporary work should pay a visit to the Heidelberger Kunstverein, which promotes contemporary art and is located next door. Heidelberg is a college town.
  • Anyone travelling through the lovely Old City will see the Old University's Baroque main building.
  • The Institution Museum, which depicts the story of Germany's oldest university, is presently housed here.
  • The excellent University Library and the (in)famous Students' Prison are both worth seeing.
  • Heidelberg is a theatrical town. The Municipal Theater, located in the heart of the city, reopened in 2012 after a complete repair and extension programme made possible by generous donations from all around Germany.
  • Other smaller theatres also provide exciting programming.
  • For example, fans of caustic and intellectually stimulating modern shows go to the Zimmertheater, Germany's oldest private theatre.
