Northern Black Forest Culture and Traditions
- Try the local customs and culture if the breathtaking scenery isn't allure-inducing enough. Try on a bollenhut, look at glassware and cuckoo clocks, or spend the night on a nearby farm.
- The Bollenhut, a hat with large red fluffy balls, represents the Black Forest.
- Married women wear black woollen balls on their hats, while single women wear eleven red ones.
- The headgear has a two-kilos weight limit. Despite only being worn historically in three villages (Gutach, Kirnbach, and Hornberg-Reichenbach), the hats are now frequently used as a general representation of the Black Forest.
- The Black Forest has been a generous source of energy and raw materials for the manufacture of Waldglas since the Middle Ages.
- The colour of this hand-blown glass is typically a greenish-yellow.
- A small number of glassmakers are attempting to preserve this dying practice.
- Visit the glass factories in Todtnau and Gersbach to see how the glass is made.
- The gateau, or Black Forest cherry pie, is one of the "heftier" customs. Locally grown cherries and Black Forest schnapps serve as the main ingredients. Yes, it is tasty, and yes, it is calorie-dense.
- Thankfully, there is also a nearby option to eliminate all those extra calories.
- Try taking a long hike through those hills; you'll be able to get rid of the majority of them.
- In the Black Forest, the charming old farms' walls, foundations, roofs, and haylofts are all made of wood.
- The grand old structures now come complete with central heating and fitted kitchens.

BEER/RADLER
#Food
- Germany's Purity Law, passed in 1516 and dates back more than 500 years, sets a four-ingredient maximum.
- Despite these limitations, Germany has over 1,300 breweries and over 40 different varieties of beer. Which beer is most favoured in the Black Forest, then? Radler.
- Lemonade and beer are combined to make the refreshing summer drink known as a Radler. Despite its initial scepticism, it is one of the most refreshing beverages you can drink on a hot summer day in the city or while hiking in the Black Forest.
- You can anticipate seeing most residents along the Dreisam afternoons sipping on this low-alcohol beverage.
- Even though this beverage has recently gained popularity in the United States, it frequently has higher alcohol contents and isn't mixed the same way. Enjoy Germany's authentic culture!
- They advise visiting a nearby Biergarten to enjoy this beverage (beer garden) properly.
- Traditional beer gardens can be found sprinkled throughout Freiburg as well as along hiking trails and gravel roads throughout the Black Forest.
SCHWARZWÄLDER KIRSCHTORTE (BLACK FOREST CHERRY CAKE)
#Food
- The most well-known sweet treat from the Black Forest is Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, or "Black Forest Cherry Cake."
- It was so delicious that we decided to serve it at our wedding reception! A chocolate sponge cake base flavoured with cherry, filled with cherry filling, layered with whipped cream and cherries, and then topped with additional cherries and chocolate flakes is a Black Forest Cherry cake.
- What is there not to love? But these aren't your typical cherries. The cherries in a traditional Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte are covered in Kirschwasser no, Brandy.
- It is one of the best Black Forest foods and is genuinely delicious. After a meal, we strongly suggest having a slice and a coffee.
GRILLWURST, LANGE ROTE
#Food
- A sausage follows our list of the top Black Forest foods (Grillwurst). Lange Rote is the most well-known traditional sausage in the southern Black Forest.
- This spicy long red sausage—but not that spicy—will be served hot and sizzling in a white bread roll known as a breisgauer brötchen. We suggest an optional caramelised onion (Zwiebeln) add-on, either whole or cut in half.
- You can make the ideal lunchtime snack by adding some German mustard. If you're in Freiburg, you can find a line of Wurststands serving the traditional Lange Rote at the Münsterplatz Farmer's Market (Münstermarkt).
- They assure you that with the enticing aroma filling the air, you won't need to search very far.
