The Best Places to Visit in Saarbrucken
Ludwigskirche
- In the 1760s, William Henry, Prince of Nassau-Saarbrücken, commissioned Friedrich Joachim Stengel to construct this church and the surrounding plaza as one cohesive work.
- The result is one of Germany's finest examples of Baroque art and one of the country's most notable Protestant churches.
- Outside, statues of the four evangelists may be found in niches, and 28 figures, including prophets, apostles, and other biblical figures, can be found on the railings.
- The interior is white and stuccoed, with galleries on all four sides supported by beautiful caryatids.
- Even down to the door handles, Stengel was involved in designing the palaces surrounding the cathedral (eight of which exist today).
Basilica of St. John the Baptist
- Another spectacular Baroque church, erected in the mid-1750s for the city's burgeoning catholic membership, was also designed by Stengel.
- French King Louis XV partially funded the church, and Pope Benedict XIV took up a collection in Rome.
- You must inspect the bronze doors before entering, which depicted scenes from the life of St John the Baptist and were restored in 1986 by local artist Ernst Alt after being damaged during the war.
- The interior was restored to its former Baroque décor.
- The elaborate pulpit from 1764 and the four confessionals from 1789, each with famous repentant sinners, are two items you must see.
Saar Historical Museum
- The scale of this museum, located next to Saarbrücken Castle, is deceiving.
- A long, thin house with a barrel roof sits on the ground level, concealing a little world of historic underground chambers and tunnels unearthed in the 1990s and 2000s.
- The galleries on the upper two floors take you on a journey through the Saarland's last 300 years through art, design, and daily objects.
- Then you'll descend 14 metres below the Schlossplatz into Saar's Medieval and Early Modern past, passing through elements of the Medieval castle and a Renaissance casemate built in the 1560s.
