  • Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany, has a slightly continental climate, with cold (but not freezing) winters and mild to pleasantly warm summers.
  • The city is situated in one of Germany's warmest regions, at least during the summer months, but this is offset by the city's altitude, which is 250 metres (820 feet) above sea level, and its proximity to the Black Forest.
  • The airport is about 400 metres (1,300 feet) from Filderstadt.
  • The average temperature ranges from 1.2 degrees Celsius (34.1 degrees Fahrenheit) in January to 19.2 degrees Celsius (66.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in July.

Why Stuttgart Is Worth a Visit: Here Are the Best Places You Must See

destination - Seasons to travel

The Mercedes-Benz Museum

  • Stuttgart's long love affair with the automobile dates back to 1887 when Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach established themselves here.
  • The Mercedes-Benz Museum commemorates over 130 years of automotive history with over 1500 exhibits spread across nine floors that place the invention and development of the automobile in the context of each era's technology, daily life, and society.
  • One hundred sixty vehicles, including some of the first-ever produced, legendary auto racers and future prototype cars, are the centrepiece of the exhibits.
  • Among the vehicles is the world's first motorcycle, a Daimler from 1885, which bears almost no resemblance to modern motorcycles except for two large wheels (it also has two smaller ones that resemble children's training wheels!)
  • The Porsche Museum (see below) and this museum are the two best ones in Stuttgart for automobile fans; however, you don't have to be one to appreciate them.
destination - Seasons to travel

Schlossplatz

  • The expansive Schlossplatz serves as the city's focal point.
  • This vast open space is well-used, surrounded by buildings from Stuttgart's past as a ducal and royal capital.
  • Its green lawns and benches are popular spots to soak up some rays, and its gardens are lovely places to stroll in nice weather.
  • The square transforms into a children's Christmas Market in November, with a miniature village, holiday rides, and a skating rink.
  • The Jubilee Column, built in its centre in 1841, commemorates King William I's 25-year reign.
  • There's also a cast-iron bandstand (1871), a fountain, and a modern sculpture by Calder, Hrdlicka, and Hajek.
  • The massive Neues Schloss, or New Palace, dominates one side of the Schlossplatz.
  • The state government now uses the palace that was once home to former kings and was built-in late Baroque style and completed in 1807.
  • Königstrasse, the city's 1200-meter-long pedestrianised shopping street and one of Germany's longest and best shopping districts, form the opposite side.
  • It concludes at the massive Hauptbahnhof, the city's central rail station and a landmark of early German Modernism until recent renovations.

  • The colourful exterior of Stuttgart's State Gallery tells you it's not another stuffy museum.
  • The opening of the new building, designed by James Stirling and a masterpiece of contemporary architecture, in 1984 marked the museum's transformation into one of Europe's finest art collections - and one of Germany's most visited museums.
  • The Staatsgalerie is primarily renowned for its exceptional collection of paintings from the 20th century, despite having a superb representation of Dutch and Italian painters from the 14th to the 19th centuries and German Renaissance art.
  • With a focus on the Classical Modern era from 1900 to 1980, the collections feature notable works by Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Max Beckmann and Pablo Picasso, among others.

  • The "Porsche DNA" that has lived on in every model since the first is highlighted in audio guides in English.
  • Even for those with little interest in cars and racing, the interactive 12-meter Porsche Touchwall, where travellers can use touch frames to browse through more than 3,000 illustrations, photographs, posters, and advertisements from the extensive historical archive, is the most well-liked area of the museum.
  • You can play sounds from different models' engines, horns, and brakes over the years and mix them into an original music track in the interactive Porsche in the Mix sound installation, which is unmatched worldwide.
  • After creating your piece of Porsche music, you can email it to yourself.

  • A highlight is the vast Marble Hall, which features beautiful chandeliers and a ceiling fresco of clouds against blue that resembles an open sky.
  • The oldest preserved palace theatre in Europe, a galleried confection built for the duke in 1757, retains its original stage machinery and a collection of rare 18th- and 19th-century stage sets.

Fernsehturm Stuttgart

  • The world's first television tower is intriguing enough.
  • Still, the 217-meter-tall Fernsehturm Stuttgart has the added attraction of an observation deck and restaurant, with sweeping views across the city and Neckar Valley into the Swabian countryside far as the Black Forest and the Odenwald.
  • The tower debuted in 1956 and quickly became a model for structures as far away as Johannesburg and Wuhan, China.
  • Fritz Leonhardt, a Stuttgart engineer, proposed the novel concrete building, thinking it might double as a transmission tower and tourist attraction.

  • It is regarded as the most romantic location in Stuttgart, partly because of its lovely setting but primarily because of Wilhelm's inscription above the chapel's entrance, "Love never dies," in memory of his late queen.
