A Sneak Peek into Pécs
- The Roman city of Sopianae, today is known as Pécs in southwest Hungary, was a thriving centre of Christianity in the fourth century.

- Sarcophagi that have been expertly carved may be found in some of these chambers, together with colourful murals of Christian icons like the Virgin Mary and Adam and Eve.
- In the intervening centuries, modern Pécs has become known for the ceramics produced by the Zsolnay factory.
- The leading lights of the Hungarian Art Nouveau movement rapidly accepted pyrogranite, created here in 1886, as a vibrant and durable adornment for their inventive structures.

Why Pécs Is Worth a Visit: Here Are the Best Places You Must See
Early Christian Mausoleum
- Around Pécs, the remains of the Roman city of Sopianae have been unearthed, but the Early Christian Mausoleum may be the most interesting one.
- This mausoleum, discovered in 1975 and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of many tomb monuments dating back to the fourth century.
- Like others in Pécs, the cemetery chapel is remarkable for the period since it had two levels: the top serving as a memorial chamber and the crypt housing the graves.
- Three marble sarcophagi may be seen in the chamber below, and the walls are painted with enduring paintings.
- These designs, which also depict the Tree of Life, the Fall of Adam and Eve, and Daniel in the Lion's Den, are partially decorative.
Cella Septichora Travellers Centre
- Close by is another sepulchral early-Christian tower with no analogue in the Danube region.
- This chapel with seven apses was found between four and six metres below the surface.
- There is no record of a burial, and it appears that the construction abruptly stopped.
- It contains St Peter and Paul's burial chamber, which has a vault decorated with paintings showing Peter and Paul pointing toward a Christ monogram, Noah's dove with an olive branch, Jonah being cast into the sea and Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
Pécs Cathedral
- Pécs Cathedral prospered under Peter Orseolo's rule in the middle of the eleventh century.
- The structure features elements from Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and neo-Romanesque styles and remnants from Ottoman rule when it was used as a warehouse.
- Based on drawings from the 11th century, most of the facade dates from a neo-Romanesque restoration in the 1880s.
- The "lower church," spanning 21 by 21 metres and featuring a white marble statue of the 19th-century bishop Nándor Dulánszky who started the restoration project, is the oldest section of the cathedral.
- The church's chapels are essential, including eerie frescoes by Károly Lotz and Bertalan Székely.
- The latter painted iconic scenes from Hungarian history on the Mary and St. Mór's walls.

Zsolnay Museum
- The oldest building in Pécs, which dates back at least to 1324, houses this museum dedicated to the 19th-century ceramicist and factory owner Vilmos Zsolnay.
- The building housed Hungary's first library when it was built there in the fifteenth century, and a century later, during the Ottoman control, it became the leading Imam of the city's official residence.
- The pottery business started by Zsolnay's father, Miklós, in 1853 is still in business today despite being nationalised in 1948.
- Many of the buildings in Pécs still have their architectural ornamentation.
- The museum is a chronology of the products made by the Zsolnay factory, including eosin-tinted faience and pyrogranite.
- When Zsolnay participated in the Hungarian Secession at the beginning of the 20th century, he produced some fantastic paintings (Art Nouveau).
Zsolnay Cultural Quarter
- Around the renovated, formerly abandoned Zsolnay manufacturing buildings, a complete cultural and recreational zone has been established east of the old centre.
- Cultural institutions also moved into this five-hectare neighbourhood during Pécs' 2010 as the European Capital of Culture, coinciding with this renovation.
- A former ceramics kiln now serves as the library for the Art Faculty of the University of Pécs, which moved here.
- In the summer, there is nearly always live music and other outdoor events in the "Pyrogranite Court," which serves as a space for outdoor exhibitions.
- A contemporary music venue is housed in the E78 building, and the Street of Artisans' Shops features pottery workshops, a well-known chocolate shop, a restaurant, and a cafe.

Pécs Culture and Traditions: A Blend of Past and Present
- In the Western world, opening stockings in front of the fire and stuffing your face with turkey and sprouts on Christmas morning is a joy.
- Consider incorporating some Eastern European traditions into your holiday celebrations by offering delicious baked portica instead of mince pies, using watermelon to decorate the table, or completely ignoring your family in favour of feeding some bears.
- The New East has various holiday customs, such as going carolling, making seasonal foods like grey peas, or donning a bear costume to ward off evil spirits.
- While a significant portion of Eastern Europe observes the Orthodox Christian Christmas, which falls on January 7 rather than December 25, practically every nation has distinctive traditions.
- Traditions are frequently remarkably similar among several of the former Soviet Union countries.
- New Year's Eve was declared the new festival to replace Christmas after the revolution to abolish religious customs.
