destination - Seasons to travel

Piazza 3 Novembre

  • Piazza 3 Novembre, which overlooks the lake, is the focal point of Riva del Garda.
  • This expansive square, flanked by colourful Venetian-Lombard homes, was once the town's economic hub.
  • Its name recalls a peace sign between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, signed on November 3, 1918, bringing a stop to World War I hostilities on the Italian front.
  • At the corner of the square stands the 35-meter-tall clock tower from 1220, the Apponale tower.
  • On the piazza between the tower and the port, there are some great shops, cafes, and restaurants where you can spend a pleasant day and people-watch.
destination - Seasons to travel

Apponale Tower

  • The Apponale Tower, located on the east side of Piazza 3 Novembre, was constructed in 1220 by the Riva del Garda noble family Bonvicini.
  • Originally, it served as a watchtower for adversaries arriving from the coastline.
  • This 35-meter-tall tower is now one of the city's most prominent tourist attractions.
  • The tower's summit is accessible daily, and you can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the town, lake, and neighbouring mountains.
  • However, remember that there are 165 steps, making it inaccessible to individuals with mobility issues.
  • Even your dog can accompany you, but it must be carried in your arms
destination - Seasons to travel

Little Morocco

  • Behind the Piazza 3 Novembre, you will find a labyrinth of narrow alleys lined with colourful, small, angled buildings.
  • This town's oldest section in Riva del Garda is known as "Little Morocco."
  • After walking through the tiny alleyway, you will reach the Piazza Morocco, a larger area with a fountain.
  • This square was once the site of the city's mediaeval castle, ruined when it was first mentioned in the 15th century.
  • From the piazza, you can observe the mediaeval walls frequently found surrounding the houses' vegetable gardens.

The Bastion of Riva del Garda

  • The Bastion of Riva del Garda is another historical landmark and an excellent spot to enjoy the lake's beauty.
  • It was constructed in the 16th century on a hill approximately 200 metres above the city and was destroyed by French troops in 1703.
  • Today, travellers can see the outside and the remnants of the tower's interior.
  • The bastion is easily accessible via Monte Oro, a 20-minute walk along a scenic path through the forest.
  • For those who prefer not to walk, a panoramic funicular is available.
  • A bar near the bastion is open throughout the spring and summer.
destination - Seasons to travel

Rocca di Riva del Garda

  • Rocca di Riva del Garda is a castle near the town centre surrounded by water and gardens.
  • The fortress dated back to the 12th century and was initially used to guard and govern the city's harbour.
  • It lost that purpose over time and is now the Mag Alto Garda Museum.
  • Numerous artwork and archaeological artefacts from the Copper Age, such as the menhir figures, are displayed at the museum.
  • In addition, the Mag Alto Museum is one of the top things to do in Riva del Garda with children because it has entire sections devoted to them.

Riva del garda Culture and Traditions: A Blend of Past and Present

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Riva del Garda, the second largest settlement on Lake Garda with about 16000 inhabitants, has long been regarded as a vital centre.
  • The city of contrlake's northern half of the lake had sway over trade routes leading north and south from the Alps,s.
  • It is not surprising that a significant portion of its history and landmarks relate to battles and fortifications.
  • Archaeological traces in the area may hint to an older date in the time of the Etruscans, although it is believed that the original settlement dates back to Roman times.
  • Following the fall of the Roman Empire, the hamlet endured waves of invasion from the north, as did many cities along trade routes in this region.
  • Even when it entered a period of relative peace during the Middle Ages, it was nevertheless threatened by the Italian city-states of Trento and Verona and the claims of Venice and Milan.
  • Eventually, this region of northern Italy fell under the jurisdiction of the Tyrolean counts, who ruled from Merano and Innsbruck, and then the Austrian Hapsburgs.
  • This region, along with the rest of the region, did not become part of modern Italy until the conclusion of the First World War. (In fact, the town was embroiled in the combat, resulting in extensive building damage at the time.)
  • Riva del Garda emerged as a tourist resort from the mid-19th century onwards with the development of "Kur" tourism in German-speaking Europe, in addition to its strategic importance (the closest to this in English is probably "taking the waters" in spa towns like Bath or Leamington).
  • The cultural elite, including Thomas Mann, Frederick Nietzsche, and even D.H. Lawrence, gave the town a polished aura, and the town grew popular with the nobility and the wealthy.
  • Riva is currently one of the most popular resorts on Lake Garda. Still, its smaller neighbours Torbole, to the east, and Arco, to the north, are trendy among younger and more athletic tourists - Torbole for windsurfing and Arco for rock climbing.

  • The noble Gerolamo Nicolò Contarini bought the entire property on May 14, 1407, during the Venetian rule of Valeggio Sul Mincio for agricultural usage. The ancient texts call it a "brolo encircled by walls," a wooded knoll with walls, arable ground, and livestock grazing. For the noble family's leisure, the brolo included a small formal garden next to the primary residence, and this garden became the Sigurtà Garden Park. In 1417, the aristocracy Contarini constructed a "Domus Magna" to his property to enhance its value. The Contarini family lived in the main home, and farmworkers lived in smaller structures.
  • Parco Natura Viva opened in 1969. The 40-hectare natural zoological garden houses 1,500 specimens from 250 wild species. Nearly half a million people and 40.000 kindergartens to high school pupils visit the Park annually. The Safari Park is for driving, while the Fauna Park is for walking. The Park breeds wild animals alongside major European zoological organisations.
  • Visitors can dive into the bay's beautiful waters and relax on patio chairs during summer days. Lake Garda sunsets are incredible from the private beach or under lovely olive trees. Two restaurants, a small ice cream parlour, and picnic tables are provided.
  • Mount Baldo, seen from the south on a bright winter day, is a stark white summit with slopes warmed by spring winds. The mountain's year-round life is shown in this photo. The "Garden of Europe," famous for its blossoms, becomes a winter paradise for skiers and snow lovers. Every season on Mount Baldo has its compelling charm and invites you to discover its many surprises.
