Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore

  • Bergamo Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Bergamo, Italy, dedicated to Saint Alexander of Bergamo, the city's patron saint.
  • Most scholars consider Santa Maria Maggiore to be Rome's second most magnificent church.
  • Only St. Peter's Basilica is believed to be more opulent. It was the first church consecrated to the Virgin Mary and has a rich history.
  • It is one of Rome's four main basilicas. The church was built in 431 AD to commemorate Mary by Pope Sixtus III, but two notable structures preceded it.
  • Surprisingly, they were also created to celebrate outstanding women.
  • The first structure on the site was dedicated to the Roman goddess Juno.
  • It was built in 375 BC and was a pagan temple for hundreds of years before being destroyed.

  • The sacristy of the church, which Colleoni's forces had demolished, was chosen as the location.
  • Whether or not church leaders allowed the demolition is still a point of contention among Italian historians.
