Civici Musei d'Arte e Storia Santa Giulia

  • The Via dei Musei, situated in a former Benedictine monastery and can be reached by passing the Roman Forum ruins, should be your sole stop while in Brescia.
  • Roman villas with mosaic flooring may be seen below the convent and are accessible via paths.
  • A magnificent two-meter bronze Winged Victory can be found among the historical objects, which also comprise altars and architectural pieces from the first century BC to the fifth century AD.
  • The gold and jewellery in the Treasury are best seen in the glittering Cross of Desiderio from the eighth century.
  • Brescia's mediaeval and Venetian art and architecture complete the image into the late Gothic and Renaissance eras.
  • The lavishly frescoed Nuns' Choir and Lombard and Romanesque cathedrals are not to be missed.
  • Rarely can a museum present a thorough and fascinating picture of a city's history spanning two millennia with such a diversity of items that are so beautifully arranged?
destination - Seasons to travel

Tempio Capitolino

  • The temple, which rose from a hillside and was initially accessible by two staircases, must have provided a striking backdrop to the centre of Roman activity.
  • Only six ancient Corinthian columns remain today, their original white marble components standing out vividly against the 19th-century brick repair holding them in place.
  • The impressive temple, constructed in AD 73 during the reign of Vespasian and dedicated to Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, still maintains its three cellars (chambers), where you can see the ancient altars and colourful marble floors.
  • Hourly excursions start with a multimedia introduction and last 50 minutes (available in English).
destination - Seasons to travel

Piazza del Foro and Roman Theater

  • If you were to stand in this tiny square, you could almost imagine yourself here in the first century AD, when the Romans erected immense, classical structures in their northern city of Brixia.
  • This was the bustling forum; there are still enough spectacular ruins to give a feeling of its grandeur.
  • Look for the old pavement with storefronts that have been dug at one side of the square if you are on the Decumanus Maximus, a section of the main Roman road today known as Via dei Musei.
  • The Teatro Romano from the third century and the remains of the Roman East Gate can be seen next to the reconstructed Capitolium rising above.
  • A wall on the nearby Piazza Labus has remnants of the basilica from the first century built into it.

Duomo Nuovo (New Cathedral) and Rotonda

  • The new Cathedral, erected in the 17th century with a central dome completed in 1825, stands side by side with the old Cathedral in stark contrast.
  • Its predecessor, known as the Rotonda because of its drum-like design, is far more fascinating.
  • Look for a carved red marble tomb, wooden choir seats, and stairs going down into the crypt in this enormous 11th- to 12th-century Cathedral.
  • The crypt was constructed in the 9th to 11th centuries as a component of the original basilica.
  • Search for remnants of Roman stonework that were used to construct it.

Castello

  • The castle of Brescia, perched above the old town, is reached through a paved walkway through gardens.
  • The castle houses the influential Visconti family and has been defended since the 13th century. Still, during the four centuries that the Venetian Republic ruled Brescia and the surrounding area, the grand entryway, drawbridge, and the castle's imposing outer defences were also built.
  • It now contains the Museo del Risorgimento, exhibits about Italy's mid-1800s independence movement, and the Museo delle Armi L. Marzoli (Armament Museum).

Casoncelli bresciani

#Food

  • A typical Italian-packed pasta dish from Brescia is called casoncelli Bresciani.
  • The flavour of the filling is often made up of grated stale bread, and cheese like Grana Padano or Bagass is enhanced by the pasta's fragile crust, dating back to the 15th century.
  • However, the filling frequently differs from one home or restaurant to another. Like creating ravioli, preparing casoncelli involves folding thin pasta sheets over the filling and pressing at the edges.
  • Several variations of the pasta exist; in Camonica Valley, the filling is made of meat or vegetables; in Longhena, the filling is made of spinach or Swiss chard.

Bagless

#Food

  • The distinctive cheese known as Bagoss is made in Bagolino, a tiny village in Italy.
  • It is created from the milk of Bruna Alpina cows, and saffron is added to the cheese when the curd breaks, giving it the distinctive straw colour of yellow.
  • The minimum age of the cheese is twelve months, although it can age for up to three years.
  • The fragrances are evocative of recently cut grass, and the peel is silky.
  • Savory, mildly spicy, and pungent describe the flavour.
  • To completely feel and appreciate the hints of chestnuts and walnuts, bagoss should always be drunk at room temperature.
