A Sneak Peek into Genoa
- Genoa (Genóva in Italian) is Italy's largest port today, with a long history of maritime strength dating back to the 10th century, when it overcame rival Pisa.
- The marble palaces that earned the city the nickname La Superba reflect the wealth that poured into the city in the 16th and 17th centuries.
- The city's most prominent tourist attractions are the historic aristocratic palaces, which are more numerous and magnificent here than anywhere else in Italy.
- Along the waterfront, in the maze of steep streets and lanes of the old sailors' quarter, which radiate out from the Porto Vecchio (old harbour), you get a feeling of how the city must have felt at its peak of sea power.
- The Aquarium and the Maritime Museum, which bring seagoing adventures to life for youngsters, are two of Genoa's top family attractions.
- The sea has long played an important role in Genoa's life, and the harbour now houses many of the city's most famous tourist attractions and activities.
- Visit the streets and squares around Piazza de Ferrari, Piazza Matteotti, Via Dante, and Via XX Settembre if you have time.
- But keep in mind that what appears to be close on the map may be a lengthy hike distant.
- Genoa is a vertical city, rising steeply from its harbor's arc to the Apennine mountains' lower slopes.

- Population: 677,000
- Currency: Euro

The Best Places to Visit in Genoa
Piazza De Ferrari
- The Piazza De Ferrari, located in the Molo sector of Genoa's old town, is one of the city's most important landmarks and provides a variety of sights.
- The big ornate fountain, which has a succession of water jets that pour into a central basin and makes a stunning symmetrical pattern and cascade of water, is the Piazza's main feature.
- A number of prominent structures surround the fountain, including the Doges' Palace, the Carlo Felice Theatre, the Genoa stock exchange, and the Duke of Galleria's Palace.
- Admire the many buildings and 19th century architecture, toss a coin into the fountain or site, and observe the residents at work.
Porta Soprana
- Genoa is noted for its once-vast city walls, which were expanded over time and encircled much of the city, making them the longest city walls in Italy.
- The Porta Soprana gatehouse and towers, which were formerly part of this bygone territory, still survive today.
- These two towers are plainly visible from many sections of the city and are only a short walk from the Piazza De Ferrari.
- The two circular towers flanking the arched entryway are capped with crenulations and provide a great photo opportunity.
Piazza Matteotti
- Despite its proximity to the Piazza De Ferrari, the Piazza Matteotti is a beautiful place in its own right, with a variety of historical buildings and views.
- Doges Palace, a genuinely luxurious palace enclosed by a series of stone columns, is at one end of the square, while the magnificent San Lorenzo Cathedral sits at the other.
- Furthermore, marketplaces are frequently conducted here, and haggling with the locals can result in a great deal.
- Finally, there is the Church of Saint Ambrogio, a magnificent structure with an intricate interior.

Genoa Off the Beaten Track
San Lorenzo Cathedral
- The church of San Lorenzo, also known as Genoa Cathedral, is a magnificent structure that is sometimes neglected.
- The building is evocative of Florence Cathedral, with a striped marble and stone front façade. The colours are stunning, with greens, pinks, blacks, and whites.
- This church, built in 1118, has stood for hundreds of years and boasts an awe-inspiring interior.
- The inside ceiling is richly embellished with frescos and vibrantly coloured artwork.
- The pink marble columns also wonderfully frame the centre altar.
- There are also some great paintings, like as Lazzaro Tavarone's The Martyrdom of St. Lawrence.
Genoa Maritime Museum
- Genoa was a prominent naval force from the 16th through the 19th centuries, so it's only natural that the city has one of Europe's largest maritime museums.
- This museum, which has four levels of historical treasures, reconstructions, and exhibitions, is a fascinating and informative location.
- One room houses a collection of globes and atlases from various eras, while another houses a recreated galley ship.
- Rooms on the second floor, on the other hand, display shipwreck replicas and a variety of naval instruments.
- In addition, an Italian military submarine is docked nearby, and excursions of this magnificent warship are available.

- Genoa's population doubled in the 1960s compared to the first half of the century.
- Yet, in the 1980s, when the old development model based on massive, state-sponsored industries became less relevant, its place as the great industrial city was jeopardised.

Genovese Pesto
#Food
- Pesto is said to have originated in Genoa. That reality is easy to overlook until you try Pesto in Genoa.
- It's made from scratch with Genovese basil and pine nuts, as well as Ligurian extra virgin olive oil, and tastes nothing like the store-bought version back home.
- It's fragrant, green, and warm, like the Mediterranean. Pesto pasta (Trofie al pesto is a local specialty) or pesto pizza are both excellent choices.
- The latter is extremely popular in Genoa, and can be found in Trattorias all around the city.
- The contrast of green pesto paste on a typical thin-crust pizza foundation is appealing.
- Take a deep breath of the pizza scent and dig in.
The Best Sandwich of your Life
#Food
- Once you try the sandwiches at THE Gran Ristoro, a Genovese institution, you'll understand why we used hyperbole.
- A sandwich here is unlike any other you've ever had.
- Personalize your sandwich by selecting from a wide range of meats, cheeses, and garnishes.
- The Italian proprietors are eager to assist you, and their passion is contagious.
- This one is worth its weight in gold—or should we say proscuitto—at just under €5.
Rosa’s Gelatos
#Food
- Choose a scoop (or two?) of smooth and creamy Italian gelato to finish your meal.
- In Genoa, finding a Gelateria is simple, however we recommend looking for "Profumo Di Rosa."
- It's well worth the extra effort because the proprietor (Rosa) is incredibly nice, speaks five languages, and makes the best gelato in Genoa (or so we think!).
- The mimosa chocolate, apple-cinnamon, and pistachio flavours are all worth trying. Rosa's sorbet is lactose intolerant/vegan friendly.

- It is an amazing example of an Italian and European romantic historical garden, designed by architect Michele Canzio at the request of Marquis Ignazio Alessandro Pallavicini.

Genoa Must-Attend Festivals and Events
- The Supernova Festival, one of the region's most important musical events, takes place around the end of April.
- Porto Antico is the venue, and music will be played nonstop throughout the festival.
- Both prominent artists and those who have yet to make a reputation for themselves on the Italian stage can be seen (and, of course, heard) among the musicians.
- Nonetheless, the event is worth seeing even if simply to learn about different musical styles.
- Everyone can discover music to their preference, whether it's electronic music, indie rock, pop punk, or hip-hop.
- The Suq Festival takes place in Porto Antico in mid-June.
- This is a cultural exchange event that allows visitors to immerse themselves in a particular culture through shows, meet-and-greets, seminars, and debates.
- Aside from that, guests can sample foods from other countries.
- Because the festival is so diverse, it is suggested for everyone interested in learning more about not only Genoese culture, but also other civilizations and discovering something new in art.
- It's difficult to walk away from the festival without having had a good time.
