A Sneak Peek into Rimini
- Rimini is a seaside resort town known for its wide beaches and vibrant nightlife.
- Over 100 beaches and seaside promenades overlook the Adriatic Sea, which are lined with villas, resorts, and hotels. Summer is the time when the beaches are bustling with activity.
- The ancient settlement of Ariminum grew where two important ancient roads, the Via Aemilia and the Via Flaminia, met about 150 kilometers south of Venice on the Adriatic shore.
- It became the Roman colony of Rimini in 268 BC and grew into a busy port and, by the late 1800s, a popular beach resort.
- Considering that it was badly battered by World War II bombing, Rimini has a surprising amount of its Roman past still intact.
- The long, white-sand beaches that stretch north and south of the port are still popular tourist attractions of the Riviera del Sole, as Italians call their Adriatic coast.
- The Malatestas, the family that ruled here from the 13th century, were great patrons of the arts and left the city a number of fine buildings and artworks.

- Daily highs of 25-28°C are typical, though temperatures can exceed 30°C.

The Best Places to Visit in Rimini
Arco d'Augusto (Arch of Augustus)
- The northern Italy's oldest known Roman triumphal arch, built in 27 BC to commemorate the construction of the Via Flaminia, stands at the southern end of Corso di Augusto, Rimini's main street.
- The arch is unusual in that its extra-wide opening cannot be closed by doors, signifying the newly achieved peace after a long period of wars.
- It was part of a ring of defensive walls that were torn down in the 1930s.
- The crenelated top is a medieval addition that replaced a crown that was most likely topped by a statue of Caesar Augustus, the arch's patron.
Tempio Malatestiano
- The Tempio Malatestiano was built on top of an earlier medieval church and completed in Early Renaissance style between 1447 and 1460 to house the tombs of members of the Malatesta family, who ruled Rimini from the 13th century.
- The facade was designed by Leon Battista Alberti, who took inspiration from the Arch of Augustus, and it was the first in the Renaissance to be based on Roman traditions.
- Piero della Francesca painted frescoes depicting Sigismondo Malatesta kneeling before St. Sigismondo in the interior.
- Although he lived and worked in Rimini and was a major source of inspiration for the Rimini School of artists, Giotto's Crucifixion from the early 1300s is his only work in the city.
- The six side chapels' marble facings are so finely carved that they resemble monochromatic paintings.
Museo della Città (City Museum) and Domus del Chirurgo
- The City Museum, which is housed in a former Jesuit Monastery, houses over 1500 works from prehistory to the present and is known for its Roman mosaics and one of the finest collections of surgical and pharmaceutical equipment from antiquity.
- Ancient sculptures, ceramics, coins, glassware, bronzes, and surgical equipment from the Domus del Chirurgo, the doctor's house that has been excavated in Piazza Ferrari, are displayed chronologically in the museum.
- The Malatestas commissioned Renaissance art, including Bellini's Pietà and Domenico Ghirlandaio's Pala, and the art gallery features masterpieces from the 14th-century Rimini school as well as Renaissance art commissioned by the Malatestas.
- The large excavation site of the Surgeon's Domus, visible through a glass cover, is adjacent to the museum.
- In addition to this Roman home, the site contains later foundations in strata that reveal Rimini's history for over 2,000 years.
Italia in Miniatura
- Children enjoy the Italia in Miniatura mini-trip through the wonders of Italy because they feel like giants in the Lilliputian village of more than 200 scale replicas of Italy's most famous attractions.
- The Colosseum, the Campo dei Miracoli in Pisa, with the Leaning Tower, castles, famous squares, and even natural features like mountains and lakes can all be found.
- A Science Fun Fair and Interactive Driving School, as well as a panoramic tower and monorail, are among the additional attractions.
Rimini Beaches
- The popular beach resort of Rimini stretches along the Adriatic coast northeast of the old town, a long stretch of white sand with gentle waves and rows of lounge chairs covered by edge-to-edge umbrellas.
- This Italian beach culture may appear strange to those seeking sand and sun, but it can be found on nearly all Adriatic and Mediterranean beaches.
- Except in mid-August, when all beaches are at capacity, most are rented by the week, but some are available for a day or a few hours.
- Hotels, villas, pensioni, and restaurants line the beach. Rivabella, Viserba, and Torre Pedrera, which are all close by, are also popular holiday spots.
- Rimini's newest attraction for children – and adults who ride it for the view of the town and Adriatic – is hard to miss.
- The Rimini Ruota is a massive Ferris wheel that soars above the beachfront near the port of Rimini.

Ponte di Tiberio
- From the Arco d'Augusto, through the Forum (now Piazza Tre Martiri), and on to the Ponte di Tiberio, a Roman bridge, Rimini's broad Corso di Augusto runs straight through the center of the old town, as it has since Roman times.
- Despite the fact that it was started by Emperor Augustus, it was finished by Tiberius in AD 20. Its five arches span the Marecchia, also known as the Ariminus in ancient times.
- It is the only bridge across the Marecchia that has survived the German army's retreat in 1944.
Borgo San Giuliano
- The colorful Borgo San Giuliano, located near the Ponte di Tiberio, features stone-paved streets lined with small brightly painted houses.
- The painted scenes and designs that adorn some of the walls of this former fishermen's quarter are a highlight. Several are based on Federico Fellini's films, who was born and raised in Rimini.
- Others portray scenes and events from fishermen's lives.
- It's a lovely place to walk around in the evenings and during the lively festival in mid-July.
Castel Sismondo
- Only the central portions of the castle, which was built in the 1400s by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta and was once surrounded by thick defensive walls and a moat, remain today.
- The Malatesta residence, which was richly decorated by tiles, frescoes, and tapestries, as depicted in contemporary paintings of court scenes, was the only remaining interior, which was itself fortress-like.
- The Tempio Malatestiano has one of these on display.
- At night, the castle's walls and towers are beautifully illuminated, and flea markets are frequently held in the park surrounding it.
- The interior is often used for art and other cultural exhibitions, and sign boards tell the story of the castle and the powerful Malatesta family.

Rimini Culture and Traditions
- In 27 B.C., Rimini was first adorned with monuments such as the ARCH OF AUGUSTUS.
- The arch was built to honor the PAX AUGUSTEA period at the end of the Roman FLAMINIA road.
- It is made of Istrian stone and resembles a temple with its high base, split columns, Corinthian capitals, and tympanum.
- The Gods' Statues, encased in the clypei, exalt the grandeur of Rome and Augustus' power.
- The TIBERIUS BRIDGE, which was built in ISTRIAN stone in A.D. 21, is made up of five arches supported by pillars and breakwater spurs set at an oblique angle to the bridge's axis to reduce the current's force of impact.
- Apart from the paved streets of the old town, the forum, the theatre, and the amphitheatre, the most recent archaeological find, the DOMUS DEL CHIRURGO (the surgeon's house), built in the II Century A.D., deserves special mention.
- It is located in Piazza Ferrari and is a fine example of Imperial Rome, with its beautiful mosaics and "tools of the trade" housed in the City Museum.
