Best Months to Visit Amsterdam: Seasonal Guide for Travellers

destination - Seasons to travel
  • It isn't easy to pick when to go because of the gorgeous scenery and moderate weather.
  • Every travel season in Amsterdam has its advantages and disadvantages, whether it's sniffing fresh tulip fields or waiting in lines to see a Rembrandt.
  • Summer in Amsterdam is the busiest travel season, which lasts from June to August.
  • Warm weather, plenty of sunlight, and lush green scenery make for unforgettable outdoor gatherings.
  • Open-air electronic music festivals, such as the techno-heavy Awakenings Festival (in June) and the progressive- and percussive-minded Dekmantel, are popular with locals and draw worldwide crowds (from late July to early August).
  • With clear skies above and the crowds gone, lines for attractions and hotel prices are at an all-time high.
  • Seats at must-visit restaurants should be reserved at least two weeks ahead of time, while time slots at popular attractions like the Anne Frank Huis and Van Gogh Museum should be reserved at least six weeks.

Why Amsterdam Is Worth a Visit: Here Are the Best Places You Must See

destination - Seasons to travel

The Rijksmuseum

  • The Rijksmuseum (National Museum) was built in 1798 to hold the country's vast collection of rare art and antiquities.
  • It is one of Amsterdam's most popular attractions — and undoubtedly its most crucial art repository.
  • The museum's impressive collection comprises over a million cultural relics dating from the 13th century to the current day and over 8,000 significant artworks spread out across 250 rooms.
  • Apart from its paintings, the Rijksmuseum features a well-stocked library with over 35,000 books and manuscripts and several fascinating displays on the growth of Dutch art and culture.
  • Its collections of traditional handicrafts, mediaeval sculpture, and modern art forms are noteworthy.
  • There are many different themed English language guided excursions available.
  • Try the amusing art history canal tour, which takes in many of the areas depicted in the Rijksmuseum's exhibits, or reserves a meal at the museum's Michelin-starred restaurant for a unique experience.
  • Guided tours in English are provided. Book tour tickets in advance online to avoid long lines (roughly 2.5 million people come each year).
destination - Seasons to travel

Anne Frank House

  • The Prinsengracht is where Anne Frank House is located (Anne Frank Huis).
  • This is the actual home where Anne's family hid for much of WWII, and it is dedicated to the tragically short life of one of the world's most well-known Holocaust victims.
  • The Franks were Jewish exiles from Frankfurt, Germany, and it was here that Anne wrote the journal that would later become an international bestseller.
  • It was released barely two months before the war ended, a few years after her death at 15.
  • The house has been preserved in most of its original state, and it serves as a touching tribute to a tragic period in history.
destination - Seasons to travel

The Van Gogh Museum

  • Since its opening in 1972, the stunning Van Gogh Museum has been one of Amsterdam's top attractions, attracting art lovers and historians alike.
  • This modern Gerrit Rietveld-designed structure is dedicated to the often troubled life and extraordinary artistry of one of the country's most revered painters.
  • The collection is organised into two sections: realistic works (1880-1887), including the iconic The Potato Eaters, and Impressionist works (1887-1890), including Vase with Sunflowers, possibly his best-known piece.
  • The stunning "Meet Vincent Van Gogh Experience," a one-of-a-kind multimedia exhibition representing the painter's life and times through lifelike digital replicas of his art, is a highlight of a visit.
  • Van Gogh's contemporaries, including famous artists such as Paul Gauguin and Henri de
  • Toulouse-Lautrec, are well worth seeing. If you have the time, check out the museum's educational seminars in areas like painting and photography.
  • On-site amenities include a café, shop, and library.

The Jordaan Neighborhood

  • The Jordaan is Amsterdam's most well-known neighbourhood, with a mix of private residences with garden courtyards, lively markets, and high-end businesses and cafés.
  • There are several exciting activities in the area, ranging from strolling down one of the many charming streets to visiting one of the many top-rated tourist attractions.
  • Lindengracht changes into a giant open-air market on Saturday mornings, with local crafts, food, flowers, and items perfect for filling a picnic basket.
  • Westerstraat is packed with 200 vendors offering a diverse range of things in a flea-market-style bazaar on Monday mornings.
  • Restaurants and cafés in Jordaan have become popular places to sit and people-watch while listening to traditional Dutch folk music.
destination - Seasons to travel

Dam Square

  • Dam Square is the most popular tourist attraction in Amsterdam, and with good reason.
  • Its most prominent feature is the 17th-century Royal Palace (Koninklijk Palace), a former house of the Dutch royal family and current host for royal functions.
  • Dam Square's top tourist attractions include the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk), the Madame Tussauds wax museum, and the National Memorial Statue, which honours Dutch troops who died in World War II.
  • This vast public space is naturally surrounded by many cafés, restaurants, stores, and vendors selling food and trinkets.
  • Tourists will also find a Ferris wheel, which is ideal for obtaining a fresh perspective and plenty of entertainment, including everything from street performers and buskers to top-notch music festivals.
destination - Seasons to travel

West Church (Westerkerk)

  • Amsterdam's West Church (Westerkerk), located near the Anne Frank Museum, is one of the city's most famous churches to visit.
  • This splendid Renaissance church's interior and exterior Gothic features finished in 1630 are renowned.
  • Its 85-meter tower, dubbed "Langer Jan" (tall John) by locals, is the city's tallest.
  • In honour of Emperor Maximilian of Austria, a giant replica of the emperor's crown has been constructed on the spire. A carillon inside the tower announces the hours.
  • Other notable features include a beautiful organ from 1622 and an attractive marble column erected in Rembrandt's honour in 1906.

  • Art is in the Netherlands' DNA from Rembrandt and the old masters through Van Gogh and a thriving contemporary art scene.
  • Amsterdam is home to some world-famous museums, including the Rijksmuseum and the Rembrandt House Museum, both must-sees for anybody interested in the Golden Age's cultural riches.
  • The Van Gogh Museum is a stunning and moving collection of paintings by one of the most well-known Dutch painters.
  • Meanwhile, the Stedelijk Museum offers travellers a tour of the previous 150 years of art, providing a comprehensive overview of contemporary art, design, and architecture.
  • In addition, the modern art scene is thriving. An afternoon spent visiting one of Amsterdam's many art galleries is a fantastic way to pass the time.
  • Travellers can also learn about the latest trends in the Dutch and international art scenes through art shows such as the Amsterdam Art Fair, the Affordable Art Fair, FOR REAL, and Art in Redlight.

Amsterdam: Your Guide to Food, Fun, and Fashion Trends

Stroopwafel

#Food

  • Let's start with the modest stroopwafel, one of Amsterdam's loveliest treats.
  • This Dutch emblem has become so popular that it's now available in my neighbourhood Starbucks!
  • However, packaged stroopwafels from other countries pale compared to the fresh, made-to-order street food variety seen in Amsterdam.
  • A stroopwafel is constructed out of thin layers of dough filled with a sweet, hot caramel sauce.
  • They're ready to eat after a quick press on the hot grill.
  • They can also be stored and kept for a long time; place them on top of a hot beverage to re-gooey the centre!
destination - Seasons to travel

Herring

#Food

  • Herring is another well-known Dutch dish and, in my opinion, one of the must-try delicacies in Amsterdam (haring in Dutch).
  • Herring is popular street food in Amsterdam, where it is offered at herring stands all across the city.
  • Although raw Dutch herring is available, it has been frozen (to assure safety) and then semi-cured in salt, aged in oak for a few days, and the bones removed.
  • It's a strong bite when served with onions, but it's one of my favourite Dutch dishes!
  • While the herring in Amsterdam is excellent, there is a picturesque Dutch fishing community on the Markermeer Lake northeast of Amsterdam.
  • There are little kiosks selling herring and other fish.
destination - Seasons to travel

Cod

#Food

  • We should discuss cod while we're on the subject of fish.
  • Salt cod is well-known worldwide (particularly in Spain!), and the Netherlands is no exception.
  • Many of the fish vendors in town provide deliciously fried salt cod.
  • It's the ideal meal when served with homemade tartar sauce.
destination - Seasons to travel

BLOEMENMARKT

#Fashion

  • If you have a green thumb or admire those who do, you'll want to visit this sumptuous "floating" market consisting mainly of moored houseboats.
  • Cut flowers, bulbs, potted plants, and other such items are available to brighten up your house or office, and even if you're on the road, you'll want to pick up a bouquet to brighten your room or, at the very least take some photos.
  • If you want to buy a pair of clogs for your friends and family back home, souvenirs are also available from neighbouring vendors.
  • The Muntplein is located between the Koningsplein and the Koningsplein.
destination - Seasons to travel

KALVERTOREN

#Fashion

  • This new three-level shopping centre near the Muntplein at the top of the Kalverstraat is a one-stop-shop for all your needs – whether a strong coffee, a deli treat, garden furniture, paint, or of course, clothes.
  • America Today, H&M, Hugo Boss, and the much-loved Dutch department store Hema are among the thirty brands spread across three floors.
  • The best part is the café and brasserie at the top, which offers panoramic views of Amsterdam.
  • The entrance to Blue is a little concealed on the upper level, and the menu is relatively straightforward, but the view is unforgettable!
destination - Seasons to travel

DE BIJENKORF

#Fashion

  • This is a high-end department store chain, is a firm favourite.
  • The initial De Bijenkorf store, which opened in Amsterdam in 1870, was the first of the company's stores.
  • The magnificent structure looms over Dam Square, ready to greet travellers. The name translates to "beehive," which is appropriate given the store's constant bustle.
  • Mulberry and the Dutch brand Fred de la Bretoniere are among the labels available, Gucci and Tommy Hilfiger.
  • De Bijenkorf also has a fantastic travel department where you can purchase high-end luggage.
  • The shoe area is a shoe lover's paradise for both men and women.
  • Then there's the book and stationary floor. The premium shops of Gucci, Fendi, and Mulberry are located on the ground level of De Bijenkorf.
destination - Seasons to travel

Walibi Holland

#Fun

  • This amusement park is another beautiful park with plenty of attractions and is especially popular with younger children.
  • Walibi Holland draws adrenaline freaks. And when you consider that the park has the most extensive collection of rollercoasters in the Netherlands, including the fastest track-based ride and a new, sudden-drop coaster, it's no surprise.
  • Apart from these high-speed, adrenaline-pumping thrills, Walibi also has some family-friendly rides suitable for both children and adults.
  • It offers the highest concentration of different roller coasters in the Netherlands, so thrill seekers will not be disappointed.
destination - Seasons to travel

Madurodam

#Fun

  • Madurodam is a tiny park in the Netherlands that is a staple of the Dutch summers and has enthralled tens of millions of people since its inception.
  • In one day, you may explore and examine practically all of the Netherlands.
  • It's one of the most well-known theme parks in the Netherlands.
  • It depicts everything typically associated with the Dutch, such as canals, tulip fields, cheese markets, and traditional Dutch buildings.
  • There are almost 5000 small trees and 55,000 plants, so it's pretty stunning.
destination - Seasons to travel

Efteling

#Fun

  • Efteling is a well-known and well-liked theme park in the Netherlands and Europe.
  • It is a fairytale themed park that first opened in 1952 with a Fairytale forest that explored the realm of fairytales.
  • It is one of the world's oldest theme parks, having opened several years before the original Disneyland. Efteling is most known for its enchanting fairytale forest, which features numerous particularly impressive life-size animatronics and is primarily linked with its kid-friendly attractions.
  • Regardless of its age, this illusion kingdom packs a punch and features numerous death-defying attractions, including the Baron 1898, a 37.5-meter leap fall coaster, and an old-school, double-lane wooden roller coaster.

  • For example, the aquarium was built in 1882 and displayed such as a coral reef system and a fascinating look beneath an Amsterdam canal.
