The Best Places to Visit in Saba

destination - Seasons to travel

Mt Scenery

  • Mt Scenery (887m), a dormant volcano that last erupted in 1640, is the summit of the pyramid-shaped island of Saba and is regarded as the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
  • With 200-year-old mountain mahogany trees covered with orchids, bromeliads, and other epiphytes, it is blanketed in the elfin forest (cloud forest).
  • The Mt Scenery Trail in Windwardside begins just west of the Trail Shop and ascends 1064 stairs.
  • Before going outside, check the weather forecast because rain might make the stairs very slick.
  • The best time to start is around 9 or 10 in the morning, so you can get to the summit around midday when it's not as overcast.
  • The new Elfin Forest Trail, which leaves at Upper Hell's Gate, is another route leading to Mount Scenery's summit.
destination - Seasons to travel

Jobean Glass Art Studio

  • Jobean, a local artist, operates out of a vibrant studio atop Booby Hill.
  • In a half-day glass workshop, you're given a torch and an endless supply of thin glass shafts to melt into whirling balls or cylinders, and then you make beads of every form and size by adding gold foil and funny things.
  • You can keep the things you make or stop by and look around the store.
  • Plates constructed from wine and Heineken bottles, as well as a wide variety of big and small animals, are some of Jobean's more eccentric designs.
destination - Seasons to travel

Cove Bay

  • One of the island's two ocean bathing areas, this small cove offers excellent snorkelling in calm weather and is protected from currents by a boulder-built seawall.
  • There is only a little stretch of grainy sand and no amenities; the mornings are the sunniest. It's a 150-meter descent from the airport.
  • Make pickup arrangements with your driver or request a taxi at the airport to take you back to your lodgings.

Saba Off the Beaten Track

Mary's Point

  • It used to take 45 minutes to walk from the subsequent settlement to the remote village of Mary's Point.
  • To relieve the isolation of being so distant from any other indications of civilisation, the Dutch government planned to relocate every hamlet and house to a region behind Windwardside known as the "Promised Land" in 1934.
  • While trekking the North Coast Trail, you can observe the ruins of Mary's Point (guide required, check with the Trail Shop).
destination - Seasons to travel

Harry L Johnson Museum

  • This tiny museum, housed in a charming sea captain's cottage erected in 1840 and surrounded by a flower garden, is jam-packed with an eclectic assortment.
  • Vintage images of Dutch royalty, an organ harmonium that is 100 years old, and a dining table decorated with Wedgwood china from the 19th century are just a few of the highlights.
  • The histories of the artefacts are brought to life by a museum guide.
  • Look, notice the sizable water collection cistern and the family cemetery outside.

  • Traditional Saban culture is still widely practised, nevertheless. Saba lace, a traditionally produced item that has gained enormous popularity in the US, is still produced by women.
  • A well-known local rum beverage is Saba Spice. Throughout the year, some well-known events highlight the vibrancy and beauty of this island nation. The most well-liked carnival is in July.

#Fashion

  • The five-square art gallery in the centre of Windwardside sells original paintings, sketches, drawings, giclees, prints, sculptures, carvings, folk art, and greeting cards.
  • Since the 1990s, there has only been one art gallery on Saba. Originally known as The Breadfruit Gallery, it changed its name to The Peanut Gallery in 2003 and was acquired by its current owners, Gersh Geenty and Emilie Declippeleir, in 2011.
  • The Five Square Art Gallery needed to undergo yet another remodelling in 2014. To "present the best in Caribbean art, and in particular Saban art, to people on Saba," according to the gallery's mission statement.
  • There is something for everyone at the five-square art gallery.

Mount Scenery Hike

#Fun

  • Hiking on the island of Saba can be incredibly rewarding, and one of the busiest trails is on Mount Scenery.
  • The highest point in the Netherlands is this dormant volcano's summit, which rises 887 metres above sea level.
  • Windwardside, Saba's second-largest town, is where the most well-liked walk to the mountain starts.
  • It takes more than a thousand steps to ascend this problematic track, some of which are slick with moss and mud, but it is worthwhile.
  • On a clear day, you can stand at the summit and take a comprehensive view of Saba and its neighbouring islands. Near the top is a cloud forest that is enveloped in mist.
  • Hiking poles and strong footwear are highly advised for the 90-minute hike.

  • They rise from the ocean floor and are adorned with corals, sponges, and a stunning variety of fish.
  • The island's dive operators oversee each dive, and permanent moorings designate acceptable areas. All dives take place in the protected marine park.
  • Due to the park's preservation, there has been little interference from visitors, leaving a pristine seascape of vibrant coral and sponges and an abundance of aquatic life, including sea turtles, stingrays, and tropical fish.
  • Snorkelers particularly like Torrens Point despite Saba's rough coastline and lack of beaches.
