A Sneak Peek into Sibiu
- The greatest German minority in Romania resides in Sibiu, a city in southern Transylvania that begs to be explored on foot.
- The city created a distinct distinction between the Lower Town, home to artisans and merchants, and the Upper Town, home to the wealthier residents and the religious elite, atop a slope surrounded by elaborate rings of defences.
- A maze of winding stairs, corridors, and alleys connects the two.
- These walkways transform travelling around into a discovery quest by snaking under vaults and traversing brick ravines.
- Furthermore, there has never been a better time to travel than now, as attractions like the Grand and Little Square have been updated due to Romania's EU membership.

The Best Places to Visit in Sibiu
ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilisation
- Four kilometres south of Sibiu, in the Dumbrava Forest, there is a fantastic outdoor museum in the Swedish "Skansen" style.
- With 96 hectares and a ten-kilometre track that passes by restored homes, windmills, livestock paddocks, workshops, churches, and farms from all across Romania, the size is amazing.
- More than 300 structures showcase a variety of architectural styles, as well as the creativity and resourcefulness of Romanian rural residents.
- With personnel bringing to life centuries-old customs and skills from weaving to cooking, many homes and workshops are more than static exhibits.
- Also, the museum has a lake where you may rent a rowboat in the summer, and there are frequent folk celebrations with vibrant traditional costumes and dances.
Piața Mare (Grand Square)
- Since Sibiu's plan was created in 1366, this enormous rectangular square has been the city's focal point.
- One of Transylvania's largest squares, the Grand Plaza is 142 metres long and 93 metres wide, making it an appropriate location for markets, fairs, and executions.
- One of Romania's finest Baroque buildings, the Brukenthal Palace, is in the northwest corner.
- The dramatic mayor's office, constructed at the turn of the 20th century, contrasts with the vast but extremely quiet Jesuit Church, which is also Baroque and dates from the 18th century.
- Take a moment to observe Casa Haller, located at number 10, and Casa Lutsch (Centre for Romania's German Minority), located at number 13.
Piața Mică (Small Square)
- To reach the Little Square, which is quite huge and has a somewhat erratic shape, enter the portal beneath the Council Tower.
- The lovely Bridge of Lies, which we'll discuss later, spans the substantial brick barriers in the middle and spirals down to the Lower Town.
- Merchant houses surrounded the area from the 14th to the 16th century, frequently referred to as the "eyes of Sibiu" because of their little dormers on their roofs and cool, shaded arcades on the ground floors.
- The first pharmacy in Sibiu is located at number 26, in a structure that dates back to 1568.

Sibiu Lutheran Cathedral
- One of the greatest and biggest Gothic churches in Transylvania is Sibiu's Lutheran Cathedral, which was started in 1371 and finished in 1520.
- Go to the east side first, where a carving of Jesus at the Mount of Olives from the latter quarter of the 15th century may be found on the choir's southern front.
- The narthex, converted into a separate chapel in the middle of the 19th century and decorated with ledger stones and monuments to Sibiu's greatest figures, is also quite important.
- One is for Samuel von Brukenthal, the Habsburg governor who left a lasting influence on the city at the turn of the 19th century, and the oldest is for the Sibiu mayor Georg Hecht from 1498.
Brukenthal National Museum
- The headquarters for a museum with several locations throughout Sibiu is the opulent mansion of the Habsburg governor of Transylvania, Samuel von Brukenthal.
- More than 200 years ago, this organisation was first established utilising Brukenthal's own holdings.
- The Brukenthal Art Galleries in his home are filled with paintings from the Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo eras by German, Flemish, Dutch, Italian, French, and Spanish artists.
- Two of Romania's four Peter Paul Rubens paintings are displayed here to give you a sense of the standard.
- The museum is awash in Transylvanian artwork, including works by the avant-garde surrealist János Mattis-Teutsch and the landscape painter Johann Böbel.

Sibiu Culture and Traditions
- Sibiu, or Hermannstadt in German, was the greatest of the seven Saxon citadels founded in the 12th century by Saxons who came to Transylvania.
- The world's first homoeopathic laboratory (opened in 1797 by Samuel von Hahnemann), the first hospital on Romanian territory (attested in 1292), the first pharmacy from Romania (attested in 1494), the oldest museum in Romania (Bruckenthal, opened in 1817), Sibiu's first theatrical performance staged in the Great Tower in 1778. The first book written in the Romanian language in 1544 is associated with this location.
- An overview of the Sibiu structure shows a two-levelled city, the Upper and Lower town, divided by remnant portions of the mediaeval fortification and linked by tiny streets that open into vast squares.
- While the Upper Town contained the richer residents and most business operations, the Lower Town housed the manufacturing region.
- The Huet Square, the Little Square, the Great Square, the Passage of Steps that connects the Upper and Lower Towns, the Bridge of Lies, and the Goldsmiths' Square can all be found in Sibiu's historical core.
