The Best Places to Visit in Murcia
Murcia Cathedral
- The cathedral in the city contains many architectural styles, but the elaborate extensions from the 17th and 18th centuries are particularly noteworthy.
- With its mighty columns and exquisite sculpture of the Virgin Mary with archangel above the leading portal, the grand baroque facade on Plaza del Cardenal Belluga is stunningly impressive.
- Inside, you'll pass by various gorgeous chapels but look for King Alfonso X of Castile's tomb.
- The bell tower is the second-tallest structure in Spain (after Seville's Giralda) and took more than 250 years to build.
- It included renaissance, baroque, rococo, and neoclassical elements by the time it was completed in 1793.
Salzillo Museum
- The pasos (floats) carried in the city's parades were fashioned by renowned Murcian artist Francisco Salzillo, making Easter Week in Murcia particularly memorable.
- He was a Baroque painter who lived in the eighteenth century.
- You can see many of the exquisite decorations he produced for Semana Santa at this museum and learn about the baroque movement in Murcia at a period when the city was developing and becoming affluent thanks to the silk trade.
- With magnificent, gilded Easter Passion images full of drama commissioned by Christian brotherhoods and churches, the sculpture reflects that attitude of confidence.
- Salzillo's beautiful nativity scene, complete with a vast cast of miniature characters, is also worth seeing.
Real Casino de Murcia
- This gentleman's club, built in the mid-nineteenth century but not completed for another 60 years, is another monument with an eclectic design.
- Although this is still a private club, you can schedule a tour and will not be disappointed.
- The outside is impressive, but the inside is luxurious.
- The billiard room, for example, has Moorish influences, with a geometric, coffered ceiling, as does the patio, which features a two-story gallery inspired by Andalusia's grand palaces.
- On the other hand, the ballroom is lavishly decorated in rococo style, with a ceiling painting depicting Murcia's most prominent cultural icons, such as Francisco Salzillo.
