Historic Visby
- Visitors arriving by ferry on Gotland arrive in Visby, a charming mediaeval town.
- It's one of Scandinavia's most gorgeous, postcard-perfect villages, surrounded by 13th-century walls.
- Expect to see lovely rose-draped homes, old turrets and towers, and many church spires in the summer.
- You'll never want to leave the town's green boulevards, winding cobblestone lanes, and quaint boutiques.

Visby's Town Walls
- The town walls of Visby are approximately 3.5 kilometres long and were constructed of limestone in the late 13th century.
- Forty-four turrets, ranging in height from 15 to 20 metres, dot these mighty mediaeval walls.
- The Maiden's Tower (Jungfrutornet) is located towards the north end of the town, and tradition has it that the daughter of a Visby goldsmith was walled up alive for betraying the town to the Danes because she loved the Danish King, Valdemar Atterdag.
- The walls continue east to the cliffs, then turn south at the town's main gate (Norderport), follow the edge of the cliffs to Söderport (South Gate), and ultimately deviate west to the ruins of Visborg Castle overlooking the bay.
Gotland Museum
- The Gotland Museum (Gotlands museum) was created in 1875 and is one of Visby's main attractions for visitors interested in learning about the island's history and culture.
- Antiquities and relics dating from the Stone Age through Viking periods and natural history and art are on display in permanent exhibitions.
- Fossils found only on the Baltic's beaches, the world's most significant treasure of Viking silver and precious runic stones, are among the highlights.
- There are guided tours of the museum (in English) and educational guided walks about town.

Gotland Off the Beaten Track
The Ruins of St. Nicholas' Church
- A side street leads from Visby's Church of the Holy Ghost to the ruins of St. Nicholas's Church, Visby's greatest church, through the remnants of the small 15th-century chapel of St. Gertrude.
- The church was once part of a Dominican monastery, was built around 1230 and destroyed by the Lübeckers in 1525.
- The gable end has two lovely rose windows. This hauntingly gorgeous chapel is now used for musical and theatrical acts.
Visby Cathedral
- St. Mary's Cathedral is located west along St. Hansgatan (Sankta Maria Domkyrka).
- It is also known as Visby Cathedral since it is the only one of the town's old churches still in use.
- It was built by German merchants and consecrated in 1225, but succeeding decades saw many changes (restored 1899-1907 and in 1945).
- Its most noticeable characteristics include the enormous square tower on the west front and two lesser towers on the east end, making it one of Visby's most frequented tourist sites.
- Burgomaster Swerting, executed in 1350, is commemorated in the south chapel.
- The church houses a magnificent carved walnut and ebony pulpit from Lübeck (1684) and a 13th-century red Gotland marble font.

- Högklint Nature Reserve (Hogklint Naturreservat) is located about 10 kilometres south of Visby. It offers stunning views of Visby, the beautiful blue Baltic Sea, and the rocky west coast from Gotland's tallest sea cliffs.
- A short climb along the rocky cliffs leads to a road that leads to some shallow sea caves and the pebbly beach below.
- You'll arrive in Ygne, a little fishing community if you continue south. Climbers enjoy scaling the knobby rock formations that protrude out into the sea.
- Sunset is lovely, but be cautious walking along the high cliffs because there are no guardrails.
- Many visitors rent bikes in Visby and cycle out here with a picnic, even though bicycling up the hills might be difficult.
- The lovely 150-year-old DBW's Botanical Garden (Botaniska Trädgrden) is located on the northwest side of Visby, just a short walk from the town walls and the sea.
- The ivy-cloaked remnants of the Romanesque St. Olof's Church (ca. 1200) stand at the garden's south end, where history meets nature.
- Visby is known in Sweden as "the town of roses and ruins," The garden is full of rose beds (rose flowers decorate many of the town's buildings throughout the summer).
