A Sneak Peek into Hoga Kusten
- Höga Kusten, or the High Coast, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in late 2000 and is the highlight of any excursion up the Bothnian coast.
- The harsh beachfront with high cliffs and craggy outcrops give way to softly undulating pebble bays north of Härnösand, a length of spectacular coastline where rolling mountains and green valleys plummet precipitously into the Gulf of Bothnia.
- Höga Kusten's stunning terrain resulted from isostatic uplift since the last Glacier Age; as the ice melted, the earth elevated by 286 metres, no longer weighed down by ice up to 3 kilometres thick.
- Nowhere else has the uplift been as significant as it has been in this section of Sweden, and it continues to climb at an annual rate of 8mm.
- There are dozens of islets off Höga Kusten, some only a few metres square, others much larger and covered in a deep pine forest.
- It is said that the tradition of preparing the foul-smelling surströmming began on these islands.
- Anyone travelling up or down the Bothnian coast should stop here; from out at sea, you'll get the best view of the country's tallest coastline cliffs (as the name implies).
- The islands themselves are havens of solitude and tranquilly, providing the opportunity to disconnect from the outside world.
- Högbonden, Ulvön, and Trysunda, from south to north, are among the most attractive in the chain.
- International Airport: Höga Kusten Airport
- Population: 4,500
- Currency: Swedish Krona
- Time: UTC+1

Best Months to Visit Hoga Kusten
- In this section of Sweden, there are five distinct seasons.
- Let's start with the famous "spring-winter" season, which runs from mid-February through Easter.
- There is a spectacular snowscape from early morning until late evening, gleaming white with sunshine.
- Then we can go ice fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, all while getting a nice tan. Spring is a brief and intense season.
- The birches will be budding in a few weeks, and the time between bird cherry blossom and lilac will be short.
- Cranes arrive and stop in the fields to rest before continuing.
- Migratory bird flights are commonly observed, and woodpeckers can be heard improving their nests from dawn tonight. Summer blurs the distinction between day and night.
- Everything is green, and the plants can almost be heard growing. After that, it'll be time to gather blueberries, cloudberries, and lingonberries.
- They are abundant in our deep forests during excellent years, and you are permitted to harvest as much as you can as part of the Swedish legal right for everyone to access nature.

- A hike in Alneskogen in late May or early June is a sensory experience rich with colours, fragrances, noises, and other elements.
- The ringing note of the green warbler (Phylloscopus sibilatrix), like a silver coin vibrating on a marble slab, is intense, and the foliage is light green.
- The famed bird watcher Erik Rosenberg describes this type of nature with old pine forest charmingly: "-The green singer's music, as simple as it is, produces a wonderfully fascinating atmosphere inside the green semi-obscurity of the grey pillar halls."
- Ornskoldsvik lies 3 kilometres from Alneskogen. Alneskogen is now a nature reserve.
- However, there was a sawmill here from 1877 until 1934.
