A Sneak Peek into Kristianstad
- Kristianstad has traditionally been an important trade centre.
- Its image as a thriving commercial centre was established when it became one of the first municipalities in Sweden to implement pedestrian zones in the city centre.
- The wetlands near Kristianstad, which previously provided shelter from enemy attacks, today serve as a haven for a diverse range of flora and fauna.
- The floodplain meadows stretch on either side of the River Helge as it winds down to the ocean.
- This natural ecosystem is so unique that UNESCO designated Kristianstad Vattenrike as a biosphere reserve.
- International researchers and local citizens out for a Sunday stroll are constantly discovering new things in the lush wetlands.
- The area is home to nesting storks and white-tailed eagles, and uncommon plants thrive in the meadows, which are flooded by increasing waters at certain times.
- The naturum Vattenriket visitors' centre, the gateway to the region's natural riches, is located in the middle of the biosphere reserve while remaining close to the centre of Kristianstad, just a short walk from the Central Station.

Kristianstad Off the Beaten Track
- Ahus is one of Sweden's best-preserved mediaeval towns. Even today, there is much to remind tourists of the time when Ahus was a part of Denmark among the cobbled streets in the centre of the Old Town.
- Ahus Museum is presently housed in the historic Town Hall on the central plaza, only a stone's throw from the majestic church of St Mary (Mariakyrkan).
- Along the busy harbour promenade, boats and restaurants crowd the shoreline. The remnants of the former castle, Aose Ahus, lie nearby.
- Ahus has long been renowned as the "source of three Swedish sins": snuff, schnapps, and an abundance of eels.
- The centuries-old tradition of eel fishing is still alive and well along the coast and in the traditional eel huts here. For many years, the area was also known for its tobacco plantations and producing the "Ahus Havana" cigar.
- In the late 1800s, every household in Ahus had its own tiny tobacco farm. The last tobacco was harvested in Ahus and Yngsjö in 1964.
- Schnapps, on the other hand, are still manufactured in Ahus! Even though French investors own the Absolut Company, the famous Absolut vodka is still made in Ahus.
- During the summer, visitors may learn all about the history of this global hit at the Absolut Showroom in the heart of Ahus.

Spettekaka
#Food
- Piped batter ribbons form Spettekaka (in English, pyramid cake) onto a conical mould to form that famous shape.
- Eggs, sugar, and flour are among the ingredients. Traditionally, spettekaka was roasted on a revolving spit above an open fire and ordered by the dozens rather than in portions.
- People were encouraged to bring their eggs to a spettekaka baker, who would produce the cake.
- They are now baked in rotating ovens and sold by the number of servings. Height ranges from 6 to 25 inches (16-64 cm).
- Serve spettekaka with ice cream, whipped cream, or a variety of sauces such as chocolate or caramel.
- It is frequently served with fresh fruit or berries. A drink of champagne or port rounds out the experience
